Who Destroyed the Great Library of Alexandria?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Since this question seems to be getting some play in the comments section below, I’ll provide a couple of links to some good sources that deal with the Alexandrian library, and with the treatment of classical literature by early Christians in general.  First, the library at Alexandria as the question is addressed by a trained historian, since this one involves a good deal of anti-Christian myth-making.  read the whole thing, because it’s actually quite interesting to see the sources involved.  To make a long story, short, however, the most likely culprit behind the destruction of the main library at Alexandria appears to be Julius Caesar, whose capture of the city in 47 BC may have accidentally ignited a conflagration which burned the library.  Sorry, but the Christians didn’t burn it down.

To address a couple of other modern myths that are usually entertained by historically ignorant secularists,

It can safely be said that the story of Christians destroying the Serapeum library was originated by Edward Gibbon in the late eighteenth century when he read too much into his sources and this story has been repeated ever since. Alexandria Rediscovered by Jean-Yves Empereur, Cosmos by Carl Sagan and From the Holy Mountain by William Dalyrymple are just three recent books to combine this myth with the earlier loss of the Royal Library while even scholars such as Luciano Canfora and Alfred Butler have tried to interpret the evidence to support Gibbon.

The sad part is, as seen elsewhere in the article, that Gibbon wasn’t even really being honest with his sources.  Secular humanists such as Carl Sagan have merely been repeating historical rubbish uncritically because it suits their agenda.  Another myth is also exploded,

Hypatia of Alexandria, the female mathematician, has become a romantic heroine, a feminist icon and an archetypal victim of religious intolerance. Charles Kingsley of The Water Babies fame published his novel, Hypatia, in 1853 and it was this that started her modern cult. However the sources for her life are scanty to say the least. Socrates is embarrassed to have to report her murder, John of Nikiou revels in it and the Suda gives a few more details that need to be treated with the same caution as everything else in that Byzantine encyclopaedia. The Christian bishop Synesius of Cyrene was a pupil of hers and despite her paganism wrote her adoring letters asking for advice. Modern myths about her include that she was a Librarian of the Great Library and that she worked at the Museum. Neither have any basis in fact or the sources and there is nothing to connect her to the Royal or Serapeum libraries at all.

Now, on to the question of the Christian treatment of classical literature in general.  Glenn Miller does a quite good job of addressing this matter.   Again, I encourage our readers to set some time aside and read the whole thing.  A good general summary, however, is this,

This is a good and thoughtful question. And, as with many questions (still!), I was at first slightly ‘afraid’ of what my research might uncover. I am generally concerned about trying to defend the acts of the post-Constantine institutional church, and this sorta fell into that arena. I was frankly surprised to find out that the church–both East and West– actually was the main preserver of classical literature during these difficult times in world history.

That rather overturns the secular narrative, now doesn’t it?

Enjoy!  And please, consider this to be a Sunday afternoon open thread.

Now Allahpundit’s Mad At Glenn Beck

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Beck hit a little too close to home for somebody’s taste,

“And one more thing. If the key to American governance is the passage in the Declaration of Independence about god-given inalienable rights, why’d the authors of the Constitution go ahead and enumerate some of those rights anyway? And why, if they’re inalienable and god-given, weren’t those rights made exempt from amendment or repeal via Article V? The touchstone of the Constitution isn’t God, it’s rule by popular consent; religion may well influence the public in deciding which rights are so critical that even the popularly elected government should be forbidden to touch them, but when push comes to shove, it’s your call, not God’s. Slavery was once a right too, after all, and I’m sure there were plenty of apologists who found religious backing for that, fair or not.”

Sorry AP, but I’m going to have to side with Glenn on this one.

Open Thread for Science Nerds – The Genetic Archaeology of India

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Anyone even remotely interested in this sort of subject, please keep reading. Anyone who isn’t, please consider this to be an open thread!

Interesting genetic research on the population of India,

The population of India was founded on two ancient groups that are as genetically distinct from each other as they are from other Asians, according to the largest DNA survey of Indian heritage to date. Nowadays, however, most Indians are a genetic hotchpotch of both ancestries, despite the populous nation’s highly stratified social structure.

“All Indians are pretty similar,” says Chris Tyler-Smith, a genome researcher at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge, UK, who was not involved in the study. “The population subdivision has not had a dominating effect.”

[snip]

The researchers showed that most Indian populations are genetic admixtures of two ancient, genetically divergent groups, which each contributed around 40-60% of the DNA to most present-day populations. One ancestral lineage — which is genetically similar to Middle Eastern, Central Asian and European populations — was higher in upper-caste individuals and speakers of Indo-European languages such as Hindi, the researchers found. The other lineage was not close to any group outside the subcontinent, and was most common in people indigenous to the Andaman Islands, a remote archipelago in the Bay of Bengal.

The researchers also found that Indian populations were much more highly subdivided than European populations. But whereas European ancestry is mostly carved up by geography, Indian segregation was driven largely by caste. “There are populations that have lived in the same town and same village for thousands of years without exchanging genes,” says Reich.

These findings are very interesting, and in some circles will prove to be pretty controversial. I’m interested in this because I think this genetic data pretty decisively decided the on-going Indian origins debate between the “One India” (OI) theory and the “Indo-Aryan Invasion” (IAI) theory in favour of the latter (please note: the term “Aryan” as it is used here does not have anything to do with Nazis or Nazism).

How we got to where we are (Part 1)

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The first in a series of essays explaining how America got into the state she’s in.

For instance, consider this: Biblical morality tells us a number of things about the subjects of work and charity. It tells us, for example, that those who do not work should not eat (II Thessalonians 3:10), and it tells us that theft is wrong (Exodus 20:15). This position is implicitly affirmed in our Constitution, with its complete lack of any provisions for social welfare or a social “safety net,” and with its ample protections of property rights. Yet, the “Social gospel” advocated by many professing Christians in America beginning after the Civil War (and continuing to this day), overturns this. Private works of charity (which were and are certainly laudable) began to be replaced by demands for the spending of public monies for the benefit of “the needy.” It became acceptable for “Christians” to call for theft from “the more fortunate” to give through direct redistribution to the “less fortunate.” This is using the power of the state to perpetrate theft, pure and simple, yet many professing believers involved themselves in the call for this type of theft and the encouragement of laziness, directly contrary to the demands of the Bible. You have millions who think this is the “Christian” thing to do. No, the welfare system is immoral. Compulsion to “do good” is neither moral not legitimate, it is not virtuous.

Likewise, rational capitalism based upon competition and having its origin in the liberty of individuals to use their abilities and assets to improve both themselves and the world around them, is a moral system of economics. Rational capitalism takes the often destructive drive of man’s self-interest, and channels it into outlets which benefit not only the capitalist, but also those whom he employs and those for whom he produces goods and services — what is often called “enlightened self-interest.” By being forced to compete for both customers and a labor force, the capitalist has the incentive to do right by them. Man’s sin nature being what it is, this ideal has not always been put into practice. Nevertheless, the “invisible hand” which Adam Smith wrote about has allowed enterprising individuals to generate profits for themselves while also providing meaningful employment for their workers and a generous standard of living for our society, as God has allowed us to be blessed. In America, even the poor live like the kings of other ages.

It’s long, but read the whole thing!

History Thread: The Nazi-Islamic connection

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Here is a video I came across and it explain a great deal of what is going on today. The Progressive Movement is currently aligned with the Islamists, this is nothing new. The German Progressive Movement or as they are better known as: The Nazis, actively made alliances with Islamists.

This Video even shows America’s beloved  Bosnian Muslims recruited in the German Army!

The Leftist-Islamic alliance, nothing is new under the sun!

The Progressive-Marxist roots of the Nazis

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Radical Leftwing blogs like Think Progress, Daily Kos, Huffington Post and Little Green Footballs keep claiming that the Nazis were Rightwing/Conservative. However the official name of the Nazis was the National Socialist Workers Party, this name is hardly a “Conservative” term. It is really a Progressive/Marxist name, since Hitler was a man of the Left.

Below is a video that will back up what I am saying. This shatters the Nazis were Rightwing myth than even many Conservatives/Libertarians have fallen for.

Again, can someone explain to me how The Nazis were Rightwing and not Totalitarian Left?

40 Years Ago Today, Man Walked On The Moon

Monday, July 20th, 2009

“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Today is the 40th anniversary of the day that man walked on the moon.  The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon.  Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr.

On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

The ‘Ark Of The Covenant’ About To Be Revealed?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

This article just simply feels unbelievable, but if true it is significant in unimaginable ways – religiously, scientifically, and historically.   This would undoubtedly be the most significant event in our lifetimes. (no matter how long you have lived).

The patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia says he will announce to the world Friday the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, perhaps the world’s most prized archaeological and spiritual artifact, which he says has been hidden away in a church in his country for millennia, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

Abuna Pauolos, in Italy for a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI this week, told the news agency, “Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses and the center of searches and studies for centuries.” The announcement is expected to be made at 2 p.m. Italian time from the Hotel Aldrovandi in Rome. Pauolos will reportedly be accompanied by Prince Aklile Berhan Makonnen Haile Sellassie and Duke Amedeo D’Acosta. “The Ark of the Covenant is in Ethiopia for many centuries,” said Pauolos. “As a patriarch I have seen it with my own eyes and only few highly qualified persons could do the same, until now.” According to Pauolos, the actual Ark has been kept in one church, but to defend the treasure, a copy was placed in every single church in Ethiopia.

The idea that the Ark is presently in Ethiopia is a well-documented, albeit disputed, tradition dating back to at least 642 B.C. The tradition says it was moved to Elephantine Island in Egypt, then to Tana Kirkos Island in Ethiopia and finally to its present site at St. Mary’s of Zion Church in Axum.

Ethiopians believe it is destined to be delivered to the Messiah when He reigns on Mount Zion – the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Before Islam, Medina Was Originally A Jewish City

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

http://www.deenislam.co.uk/gallery/artefacts/medina.JPG

Today, we hear a lot of talk about how Jerusalem should be split, – one half surrendered to Muslims, while the other half remains a mixed Muslim/Jewish city in Israel.  If this is the appropriate diplomatic way of turning back the clock, and ensuring peace between Muslims and Jews, then why not try out this solution with Medina first–a city that was originally Jewish?

________________________________________

Although the fact is little publicized, the Arab world’s second holiest city, Medina, was one of the allegedly “purely Arab” cities that actually was first settled by Jewish tribes. 1 History shows that Judaism was already well established in Medina two centuries before Muhammad’s birth.

On page 40, of his book “Arabs In History”, Bernard Lewis writes:

The city of Medina, some 280 miles north of Mecca, had originally been settled by Jewish tribes from the north, … The comparative richness of the town attracted an infiltration of pagan Arabs who came at first as clients of the Jews and ultimately succeeded in dominating them. Medina, or, as it was known before Islam, Yathrib, had no form of stable government at all. The town was tom by the feuds of the rival Arab tribes of Aus and Khazraj, with the Jews maintaining an uneasy balance of power. The latter, engaged mainly in agriculture and handicrafts, were economically and culturally superior to the Arabs, and were consequently disliked…. as soon as the Arabs had attained unity through the agency of Muhammad they attacked and ultimately eliminated the Jews.”

The number of Jews in Medina swelled following the Roman invasion of Israel – the subsequent expulsion of its Jewish population, and from Jews fleeing persecution in Persia2.  These refugees were assimilated into the three major Jewish tribes in Medina: the Banu Nadir, the Banu Quynuqua, and the Banu Quraiza.  When these Jews resettled in Medina, they took with them a superior knowledge of agriculture, irrigation, and industry. Homeless Jewish refugees in the course of a few generations became large landowners in the country.  In addition, the refugees who had come from Israel quickly became the controllers of its finance and trade.  This new Jewish prosperity also quickly became a direct challenge to the Arabs of the region, particularly the Quraysh at Mecca (of which Mohammad was a member) and other Arab tribes in Medina.

According to Alfred Guillaume,

At the dawn of Islam the Jews dominated the economic life of the Hijaz [Arabia]. They held all the best land … ; at Medina they must have formed at least half of the population. There was also a Jewish settlement to the north of the Gulf of Aqaba…. What is important is to note that the Jews of the Hijaz made many proselytes [or converts] among the Arab tribesmen.5

To add fuel to this fire, the Jews, strong in their faith in G-d, refused to accept Mohammad’s claims to be the final prophet.  In response, a precedent was established by Muhammad among Arab-Muslims to expropriate that which belonged to the Jews of Medina.

Guillaume continues,

… [Jewish] leaders opposed [Mohammad's] claim to be an apostle sent by God, and though they doubtless drew some satisfaction from his acceptance of the divine mission of Abraham, Moses, and the prophets, they could hardly be expected to welcome the inclusion of Jesus and Ishmael among his chosen messengers.

... the existence of pockets of disaffected Jews in and around his base was a cause of uneasiness and they had to be eliminated if he [Muhammad] was to wage war without anxiety.

Because the Jews preferred to retain their own beliefs the Jews of Medina fell under suspicion of treachery by Mohammad and were forced to lay down their arms and evacuate their settlements. Valuable land and much booty fell into the hands of the Muslims.12

Jealous, frustrated, and offended by the refusal of the Jews to accept him as a prophet of G-d, at the first feeling of military superiority over the Jews of Medina, Mohammad gave up his attempts to convert the Jews, and decided instead to make war on them proclaiming the following:

“Two religions may not dwell together on the Arabian Peninsula.”13

This edict was carried out by Abu Bakr and Omar 1, the Prophet Muhammad’s successors; the entire community of Jewish settlements throughout northern Arabia was systematically slaughtered.

According to Bernard Lewis,

“the extermination of the Jewish tribe of Quraiza was followed by “an attack on the Jewish oasis of Khaibar.”14

The battle of Khaybar, (the final destruction of the Jews of Medina) is a battle well known by Muslims today.  They often recall it at “anti-Israel” rallies, protests, speeches, and all over youtube, with the chant “Khaybar Khaybar ya Yahud, jaish-Muhammad saya’ud” (Khaybar Khaybar oh Jews, the army of Muhammad will return)15

They recall as their greatest hope, and sincerest joy to repeat the massacre at Khaybar done by their “pefect man” Mohammad.  At Khaybar, after the Jews were forced to flee their homes and villages in Medina, Messengers of Muhammad were sent to the Jews who had escaped to the safety and comfort of Khaibar, “inviting” Usayr, the Jewish “war chief,” to visit Medina for meditations.

Usayr set off with thirty companions and a Muslim escort. Suspecting no foul play, the Jews went unarmed. On the way, the Muslims turned upon the defenseless delegation, killing all but one who managed to escape. “War is deception,” 15 16

The slaughter of Arabian Jews and the expropriation of their property became Allah’s will. This massacre is recalled joyfully in the Koran:

… some you slew and others you took captive. He (Allah] made you masters of their [the Jews'] land, their houses and their goods, and of yet another land [Khaibar] on which you had never set foot before. Truly, Allah has power over all things.18

Guillaume reports that the anti-Jewish attack at Khaibar was fiercely fought off, but “though the inhabitants fought more bravely here than elsewhere, outnumbered and caught off their guard, they were defeated.”19 Those who somehow survived constituted the formula for Islam’s future successes. Some of the Jews, “non-Muslims” or infidels, “retained their land,” at least until Muslims could be recruited in sufficient numbers to replace the Jews. Meanwhile, the Arabian Jews paid a fifty-percent “tribute,” or tax, for the “protection” of the new plunderers. As Professor Lewis writes, “The Muslim victory in Khaibar marked the first contact between the Muslim state and a conquered non-Muslim people and formed the basis for later dealings of the same type.”20

But for the murder, ethnic cleansing, occupation, massacre, atrocity, destruction, and rape of the Jews of Medina by Islam, Medina would probably still be a major Jewish city today!  Instead, it is a completely Islamic city where non-Muslims by law are not even allowed to enter.

Therefore, remember, and mention the next time you hear someone opine about the splitting of Jerusalem, that if any wrong is going to be righted by a transfer of land to its supposedly “rightful” owner to ensure that Jews and Muslims can live together in peace, the world should start with returning at least one-half of Medina to the Jews.  Only thereafter should it even begins to ponder the future of Jerusalem!
