Moqtada al-Sadr is now an Ayatollah

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

This will probably be trouble in Iraq, Moqtada AL-Sadr was in Iran 2 years. He clearly is one of their agents and is up to something.

Iraq: Radical cleric becomes ‘ayatollah

Baghdad, 5 May (AKI) – Radical Iraqi Shia cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, is reported to have assumed the title of Grand Ayatollah after concluding his studies in the holy city of Qom in Iran. Sources close to the cleric’s faction released the news to the Arab daily, al-Sharq al-Awsat.

Around 70 supporters of al-Sadr on Sunday concluded a conference in the Turkish city of Istanbul where they elected new leaders and mapped out their future.

Al-Sadr, who leads the Mahdi Army militia, also met both Recep Tayyip Erodgan, the Turkish prime minister, and president Abdullah Gul in Ankara on Friday during his visit to Turkey.

So he goes to Turkey and is recieved by their Governemnt. Why are we still giving weapons to Turkey. Any nice religion where a Thug can become a respected  religious leader.

Iraq deteriorating as Pro US Militias begin rejoining the insurgency

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Another example of why Muslims can’t be trusted. Gen. Petraeus started the Sons of Iraq Militias to get Sunnis in Iraq to fight AL-Qaeda. It worked but when the US gave responsibility to the Iraqi government, The Shiite led government stopped paying the SOI and arresting its leaders. It also didn’t integrate them into their security forces like they promised the Americans. Now the violence is back.

Iraq bloodshed rises as US allies defect

IRAQ is threatened by a new wave of sectarian violence as members of the “Sons of Iraq” – the Sunni Awakening militias that were paid by the US to fight Al-Qaeda – begin to rejoin the insurgency.

If the spike in violence continues, it could affect President Barack Obama’s pledge to withdraw all combat troops from Iraqi cities by the end of June. All US troops are due to leave the country by 2012.

A leading member of the Political Council of Iraqi Resistance, which represents six Sunni militant groups, said: “The resistance has now returned to the field and is intensifying its attacks against the enemy. The number of coalition forces killed is on the rise.”

This is another example of  why it makes no sense to try to build a democracy in the Muslim world. They don’t compromise and turn on each other. Invading Iraq was a mistake. I am for leveling the whole place and leaving. Turn it back to a desert and leave them up to their own devises. We should do the same in Afghanistan, we need to level it and leave. I am sick of us trying to help Muslims, let them all destroy each other.

madeiranIran ‘offered to halt attacks on UK troops’ in nuclear pact
Iran offered to halt attacks on British soldiers deployed in Iraq in return for a secret pact that would enable it to continue its nuclear programme, a senior British diplomat has said.

Sir John Sawers, the British ambassador to the United Nations, revealed that Iranian officials openly acknowledged complicity in attacks that killed scores of British soldiers in southern Iraq.

“The Iranians wanted to be able to strike a deal whereby they stopped killing our forces in Iraq in return for them being allowed to carry on with their nuclear programme: ‘We stop killing you in Iraq, stop undermining the political process there, you allow us to carry on with our nuclear programme without let or hindrance’.”

Iran supplied arms, training and strategic direction to Shia Muslim militias that were battling British forces for control of Basra and other southern cities. Iran supplied the militias with a deadly bomb, the shaped-charge explosive device, that required precision engineering at its military factories.

This can’t be true. The left told us it wasn’t. Iran hates Iraq and would not help them (?) and it was just republican hawks trying to link Iran to Iraq so they would have a reason to invade them too!!11!!!!!!1!

Iraqis having open romances

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

It seems life is returning to normal in Iraq. Couples are openly showing affection in public.

Iraqis open arms to romance as violence fades

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Romance is in the air in Baghdad as war-weary Iraqis celebrate Valentine’s Day after a sharp drop in violence, allowing lovers to cautiously hold hands in parks and to buy gifts for their sweethearts.

Public courtship and more daring clothing for women are increasing after years of growing intolerance, perhaps signaling the Islamic dogma and conservatism that accompanied Iraq’s slide into sectarian slaughter may be losing their grip

This is a positive sign, let’s hope it continues.

Mor Gabriel

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

mor-gabriel

Mor Gabriel is a monastery dating back to the year 397 AD. It sits on the Turkish-Iraqi border. The monks and the rest of the religious order have preserved the Aramaic language and it is spoken and taught there to this day.

Unfortunately, the place is in trouble by three Muslim villages in the area. They claim that it sits on Islamic holy ground and that also say a mosque used to be there. Funny that the monastery is 200 years older than Islam.

Founded in 397, it is the oldest functioning Christian monastery in the world. It is located on the plateau of Tur Abdin, “The Mountain of the Servants of God,” on the Turkish border with Iraq. The see of the metropolitan archbishop of Tur Abdin, Mor Timotheus Samuel Aktas, with its three monks, 14 nuns, and 35 young people who live and study there, it is a religious and cultural point of reference for all Syriac Orthodox Christians, who still preserve ancient Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Every year it welcomes more than ten thousand tourists and pilgrims, many of them Syriacs of the diaspora in Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden.

Now, however, the future of the monastery and the Christian minority is threatened by a series of lawsuits against the monks and the prestigious religious institution. In August of 2008, the leaders of three Muslim villages around the monastery accused the community of proselytism, for having students to whom they can hand down the Christian faith and the Aramaic language. Their case has not yet been accepted by the Turkish court. But the village leaders are also asking that the monastery’s land be appropriated and divided among the villages; that a wall be knocked down that was built during the 1990’s (when the monastery was on the front of the conflict between the Turkish army and the Kurdish communist party (PKK)). According to the Muslim leaders, there used to be a mosque on the land where the monastery was built. “The accusation is absurd,” says David Gelen, leader of the Aramaic Foundation, “the monastery dates from 397 A.D., about 200 years before the prophet Mohammed and the construction of any mosque whatsoever. And yet the court has considered hearing the case.”

Gelen says that he thinks a “campaign of intimidation” is underway against the religious of the monastery. “Bishop, monks, and nuns,” Gelen continues, “are always threatened in the most direct way possible by the inhabitants of the village, and they do not dare present themselves at trial or defend themselves in some way. So for some time, the monks and nuns have not had the courage to leave the confines of the property.

American Troops In Iraq To Get Beer For Superbowl

american-soldier-drinking-beerBeer Ban Lifted for U.S. Troops in Iraq for Super Bowl

BAGHDAD —  (AP)  American troops in Iraq will be allowed to drink beer without fear of court-martial for this year’s Super Bowl — an exception to a strict military ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones.

In what is sure to be a major morale boost, the top U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. Raymond Odierno issued a waiver Wednesday paving the way for troops to participate in the popular American football tradition.

Super Bowl XLIII will kick off on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Florida, but it will be 2 a.m. in Baghdad when the live broadcast starts in Iraq. Troops will gather in dining halls on military bases nationwide to watch the game.

A copy of the waiver said the consumption of alcoholic beverages will be limited to Feb. 1-2 and service members can only have two, 12-ounce beers each.

Odierno also appeared to acknowledge the sensitivity of drinking alcohol in an Islamic country, particularly considering the game falls during a holy period for Iraq’s majority Shiite Muslims.

The waiver orders commanders to “keep in mind all host nation laws and customs regarding alcohol consumption” and “to exercise discretion and good judgment in enforcing these guidelines and restrictions.”

U.S. troops have been banned from drinking, possessing or selling alcoholic beverages under a general order that also bans them from possessing pornography and other activities. They can face a reduction in pay or rank or even a court-martial if they violate the rule.

The Washington Post reported that several service members said the only other time the ban was lifted was in 2005, for troops operating under the Baghdad command.

Drinking alcohol isn’t illegal in Iraq but is banned under Islam, and extremists have frequently targeted liquor stores.

The exemption comes as the U.S. military faces stricter Iraqi oversight under a new security agreement that took effect on Jan. 1.

Violence has declined dramatically over the past year, and the Americans are involved in less combat, focusing more on their training and advisory roles.

US troops come under Iraqi authority for the first time

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

From Gulf News

Baghdad: Iraq’s prime minister says the handover of the heavily fortified Green Zone and the presidential palace is the most visible sign his country has regained its sovereignty.

Nouri Al Maliki spoke on Thursday during a ceremony marking the takeover by Iraqi authority of Saddam Hussain’s large palace.

The takeover is part of a security deal with the United States. After the 2003 US-led invasion the palace had served as the US Embassy and headquarters of the US military in Iraq.

Doh! Suicide Bomber Kills Anti-Israel Protester

Monday, December 29th, 2008

That’s a bummer. But as long as they are killing each other, I’m not going to complain.

MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) — A suicide bomber on a bicycle in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul targeted a protest condemning Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip, killing one civilian and wounding 16 on Sunday, police said.

“One civilian was killed and 16 were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up when he rode his bicycle into the middle of an anti-Israeli demonstration in the city,” local police Major Wael Rasheed told AFP. (AFP)

At least they don’t count the suicide bomber among the casualties…

Iraqis support Shoe Thrower

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

This is the reason I believe Iraq was a mistake. The people there hate us and want us out. Even after all we did, they hate us. We should of left Saddam in there.

Iraqis urge government to free shoe-thrower

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Protesters across Iraq Tuesday urged government authorities to free the TV correspondent who threw his shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush.

Hundreds of students at Diyala University in Baquba carried banners demanding the release of Muntadhar al-Zaidi — described by demonstrators as an “honorable Iraqi.”

Smaller protests emerged in the Anbar province city of Falluja and in two Baghdad locations — Baghdad University in the northern part of the city and western Baghdad’s Ameriya district. In those events, students also took to the streets.

Bush was naive and stupid in believing Muslims want democracy. They want a Caliphate and their Empire. We should of attacked Saudi Arabia and Iran, that’s the real enemies. When we fight Islam, it shouldn’t be about liberation, but one of destruction. Until we fight that way, Islam will continue to expand.

War’s Over, We Won (No Thanks to Barack Obama)

Friday, November 14th, 2008

If Barack Obama had gotten his way, Iraq would now be in the hands of Islamists, and America’s image would have suffered a crushing blow. He voted to cut off funding for the troops, just when they needed it most, and still refuses to admit he was wrong.

Well, he was wrong, and George W. Bush deserves credit for refusing to back down when all around him were losing heart: “The war is over and we won.”

Michael Yon just phoned from Baghdad, and reports that things are much better than he had expected, and he had expected things to be good. “There’s nothing going on. I’m with the 10th Mountain Division, and about half of the guys I’m with haven’t fired their weapons on this tour and they’ve been here eight months. And the place we’re at, South Baghdad, used to be one of the worst places in Iraq. And now there’s nothing going on. I’ve been walking my feet off and haven’t seen anything. I’ve been asking Iraqis, ‘do you think the violence will kick up again,’ but even the Iraqi journalists are sounding optimistic now and they’re usually dour.”
