Another Saturday night drinking thread featuring Cliff Claven from “Cheers”…

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Cliff says to Norm: “Well, ya see, Norm, it’s like this…A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and
weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells, making a faster and more efficient machine. And so, that’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

A Proud American Walks To Thank Her!

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

This gentleman’s name is Sinh Tho Nguyen, a resident of Ft. Worth, Texas, but his history is more interesting than his current residence.

Born in Viet Nam in 1969 to a Viet Namese mother, and a U.S. Army father he never knew, Sinh immigrated to the U.S. in 1992. Since that time he has become a U.S. citizen, graduated from the University of Texas-Arlington, served in the U.S. Army, and earned his Masters degree while serving at Fort Mead, Maryland, taking night courses.

Just over a year and a half ago he got the idea to walk from shore to shore to thank America, and it’s military active duty and vets. Working as a contract meter reader in Ft. Worth, he was able to fund his journey with twenty five thousand dollars, and some good advice, not to cross from California to Texas in the summer. Sinh’s original plan was to cross from San Diego, California to Atlantic Beach, Florida, near Jacksonville. Instead, he reversed his course, and began his trek at Atlantic Beach.

As recently as 26 Sep 09, he was in Mesa, Arizona, with a planned arrival in San Diego by Thanksgiving, averaging about twenty four miles a day.

Sinh’s planned trip required a two week stay in Ft. Worth, as his badly battered feet required medical attention, due to the blisters and bruises caused by the heat, the walking, and the wearing of Croc shoes.

Carrying a U.S. flag, with a sign on his back which states “Shore to Shore, A walk across America to honor those who serve,” Sinh has an infectious positive attitude, and a radiant smile. Taking time off from his Phd program, Sinh has nearly completed his journey, and has found out more about the true nature of America for his effort. Not only is he expressing his love of this country, he has found many that share that feeling, and have given back to him what they could in support of his effort.

I hope one day I can meet with Sinh. His expression of patriotism is inspiring, and he possesses the gratitude that too many Americans have never known, or forget unless reminded.

While Sinh’s story won’t command the headlines that the latest salacious celebrity faux pas or our current president’s apology for America’s existence will, he is truly a man to be admired and respected.

For any readers in the Arizona or SoCal area, give him a honk and a wave for us all as proud Americans.

SAUDIS WILL LET ISRAEL BOMB IRAN NUCLEAR SITE

The head of MI6 discussed the issue in London with Mossad chief Meir Dagan and Saudi officials after British intelligence officers helped to uncover the plant, in the side of a mountain near the ancient city of Qom.

The site is seen as a major threat by Tel Aviv and Riyadh. Details of the talks emerged after John Bolton, America’s former UN ambassador, told a meeting of intelligence analysts that “Riyadh certainly approves” of Israel’s use of Saudi airspace.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband acknowledged that the danger of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East was “particularly potent” and refused to rule out military action altogether but he insisted: “We are 100 per cent focused on a diplomatic solution.”

More Troops in Afghanistan? Request Denied.

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I don’t know what this smells like, but whatever it is, it ain’t victory,

U.S. and NATO Afghanistan commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s long-awaited report containing a request for additional troops on Saturday was submitted to the Pentagon, but the Defense Department will hold it until the Obama administration reconfigures its Afghan strategy.

Spokesman Lt. Col. Tadd Sholtis told media outlets today that McChrystal hand delivered the report to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Adm. James Stavridis.

In the report, which was leaked to the Washington Post on Monday, McChrystal warned of  “mission failure” if the size of the allied force in Afghanistan remains the same.

The White House, however, has asserted that it will review the nation’s entire Afghan strategy before considering McChrystal’s request. But top Republican lawmakers have been pressuring the administration to act quickly.

“Right now the focus is on the strategic assessment itself. [The troop request] will be shelved until such time that the White House is ready,” a defense official told Reuters.

Sure, sure.  We’ve got a war on in a place literally crawling with Islamic terrorists who are just begging to be rendered horizontal and room temperature, the lives of American troops are on the line, and the President wants to slowball this?  Maybe if McChrystal could find some way to pitch this troop surge to the President as some sort of shovel-ready project that’s just begging to have billions in stimulus taxpayer dollars thrown at it, he might find a more receptive audience.

But, as DrewM over at Ace of Spades HQ points out, Obama may be taking this route because he realises that he doesn’t have the political capital left even within his own party to both get the troop surge McChrystal wants and get a watered down health care “reform” bill through.  So he’s throwing the troops under the bus to get the far-left to accede to a health care plan that’s not as radical as they wanted.

We have a weak President.  We know it.  The military knows it.  Our enemies know it.

Pacifier Alert!

Somebody better call the “whambulance

And in other news:
From the Washington post – McChrystal: More Forces or ‘Mission Failure’ in Afghanistan.

What does POTUS say:

President Barack Obama is warning U.S. commanders that he’s “skeptical” about whether more troops will make a difference in Afghanistan, saying he’ll approve an upcoming request only if the forces fit into a strategy to beat back al-Qaida and protect the United States.

Of course as history has shown time and time again, politicians are better at winning wars then any Generals are. Especially when it comes to this Community organizer.

Tell Them…WELCOME HOME!

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Listening to the radio while driving the other day, I happened upon a host, Jeff Bolton. His show is one of many I listen to, as he has been a strong supporter of our military.

Several callers in a row were veterans of Viet Nam, and at the end of one of the calls I was expecting him to say what so many have said, since G. Gordon Liddy first started doing so in the early 90’s, and that was to say “Thank You For Your Service.”

It was a false expectation on my part, as Bolton said something I was completely unprepared for. Something that made my eyes well up with tears, and caused me to gasp a little.

He stated, for this Viet Nam vet, who probably never heard these words before…WELCOME HOME!

Of course. He was correct, it was seldom said. Even by family and friends. It was as if everyone wanted to forget it ever happened, that it was in the past, and the less said about it, the better.

I came home just as Saigon was falling, more than two years after combat operations ended, and yet, I still had some mental midget yell “baby killer’ at me at LAX. I heard of much worse greetings by returning combat vets.

When I returned, it was a rush to get to a court room in East Texas and begin what would be a custody battle for my children that would last another six years. While my mind was occupied with immediate concerns, my heart still hadn’t made the disconnect with the strong affection I had for the life I had been living in the Philippines, nor of the experiences I had during the evacuation of Saigon in Operations New Life and Operation Babylift.

On several occasions I would attempt to relate some of my experiences with family and life long friends, but they would cut me off and change the subject. They didn’t have to participate in the ugliness or the beauty of it all, and did not want to be reminded of it.
They just did not want to know about it.

Subsequently, it took me much longer to process it all and put it in its proper perspective.

For the vets and active duty personnel here, you will understand what I mean, when I say it is other vets and active duty I feel a stronger kinship with. We know the looks in fellow warriors eyes, without saying a word. For those who never wore a uniform, this is not intended to denigrate you in any fashion. It is just not possible to understand without having been there, even with all the invaluable support you provide.

My reaction to Jeff Bolton’s comment surprised me, and hurt me in a self-pitying way. No, no one ever told me Welcome Home, not even those who loved me most, but it wasn’t their fault, they just didn’t understand. It also hurt for those many I knew who came home to be buried, and for those who were never the same again. They too were never welcomed home.

So, a lesson learned and not to be forgotten.
Whenever you encounter a vet or a returning service member, don’t be shy, shake their hand, thank them for their service, and never fail to always extend a heart felt WELCOME HOME!

It means much, much more than you will ever realize.

Our R.O.E. And Lack Of Support In Afghanistan Is Killing Our Marines!

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

“We are pinned down. We are running low on ammo. We have no air. We’ve lost today.”

While I was driving home in the rain and heavy traffic Friday evening, my mood was quickly downgraded to that of thoroughly PO’ed.

I was listening to Mark Levin and he was in full outrage mode, rightfully so, as he read a report from 8 Sep ‘09.

‘We’re pinned down:’ 4 U.S. Marines die in Afghan ambush.

There are many aspects of this story that are infuriating, and I encourage you to read it all. A few items from this story I find not only infuriating, but inexplicable, as well.

Where was the air support they were promised would be only minutes away?

The first shot cracked out at 5:30 a.m., apparently just as the four Marines and the Afghan unit to which they were attached reached the outskirts of the village. It quickly swelled into a furious storm of gunfire that we realized had been prepared for our arrival.
*****
It was now 7:10 a.m., and with the helicopters prowling overhead and firing into the hillsides, the incoming gunfire slackened enough for us to move again.

Where was the artillery support they were promised, when they were following the restrictive R.O.E., and why wasn’t the artillery support supplied with appropriate rounds?

How can our troops be expected to have confidence in their missions if they know they won’t get the support they deserve and expect?

As a result from this FUBAR, four of our Marines were killed that day, and three others were wounded, along with the Afghan troops.

I can point fingers in many directions, but the main culprit in this is directed at our president.
Jennifer Rubin says it best:

This may be the most damning, but not the only, indication that the president doesn’t have his heart in this. There’s the aversion to persuing “victory.” And the leaking game over troop levels and various options also suggests the “do what it takes” sentiment is not in full flower. A robust commitment to military victory does not come naturally to Obama.

That our troops are at the tip of the spear in the GWOT, and don’t receive everything they need to engage the fight properly, is a disgrace on many levels.

For our Marines killed that day, and their loving families, I extend my deepest sympathy, and gratitude for their service.

Obama’s 1983 Nuclear Freeze Magazine Article

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

I came across this oldie, but goody. In 1983 at the height of renewed tensions between The Soviets and NATO due to Reagan deploying the Pershing Missiles, Barack Hussein Obama wrote a magazine piece. in it he repeated Soviet propaganda and even Compares “American Militarism” to Nazism! See update below.

In 1983, at the height of the cold war, Barack Obama, then a senior at Columbia University, wrote in a campus newsmagazine about the vision of “a nuclear free world.” The article in the Sundial profiled two campus groups: Arms Race Alternatives and Students Against Militarism.

Obama was and still is a radical. That is why he has appointed Totailitarian Radicals like Green Czar Van Jones and  teh Eugenics supporting Science Adviser Holdren to his administration. He is a Progressive who wants radical change.

He was wrong about the Cold war then, he is wrong about what Americans want now!

Update: It was not Obama who compared Reagan’s policies to Nazism, but another Progressive Radical. Either way Obama is writing from a radical viewpoint and is expressing the same opinions as the other writer.
