In keeping with our new Tradition I have set up a Drinking thread. I am going out for a bit and will join when I resume. Tonight I am drinking a very good Indonesian Beer that I am sure Island Libertarian, who travels to Indonesia knows well. It is called Bali Hai, and it is an excellent brew!

You must admit it was a little easier back then. You have done a commendable job of asking the more extreme factions here to get lost.
It didn’t just get better on its own, and there was a reason why extremists had an easier time posting their crap at LGF back then: I didn’t have the tools I have now.
The advance of web technology, especially Ajax technology, has enabled me to moderate LGF in a way that simply was not possible a few years ago.
When this site started getting popular and there were suddenly thousands of comments every day, it was completely out of control. I could not read all those comments, there was no easy way for people to report extremist crap, and the constant press of events and news stories made it impossible for one person to deal with it all.
I now have software tools that are a quantum leap better than the primitive techniques available a few years ago, and that’s a huge reason why the extremists are now being pushed out.
What a load of crap that only the new lizards would swallow. Charles was the prime instigator of the nasty stuff. Here is a post of his from 2002, “The Islamic State of Holland”, which he had now taken down from the archives:

mmmmkay, I’m trying to wrap my head around thid:
A) You change the direction your blog is going 180 degrees (in this case, it means completely abandon one set of principles and adopt the diametrically opposed principles like light and dark, but I digress)
B) You ban people from the first iteration because, unlike you, they have not abandoned their principles or core beliefs (doesn’t matter which of the two were your core beliefs, at one point you abandoned one for the other — again, I digress)
C) Those people who held to their core then start expressing their opinions elsewhere in forums which share those views.
So, naturally
D) You delete all record of them having ever been a part of your forum, even though those comments may have been perfectly logical when they were first posted to your forum and the deletions turn your own forum history into the blog equivalent of Swiss (sorry Dave in Aus) cheese.
LOL, his archives will be interesting reading, once he deletes the comments of all those he’s banned. Most of the old threads will be just a bunch of “deleted” entries.

I’m tellin’ ya — It’s a psychology experiment. One along the same lines of that 1950’s experiment (that I can’t remember right now) in which people responded to the authority figure telling them “the experiment must continue”. Chuckie has just stepped it up to the next level. The experiment is now not just banning dissenters, it is erasing their history and the subjects of the experiment are being measured for their approval/disapproval after having been conditioned by the bannings.

Boards like this should be transparent. You should represent who you are and argue your positions based on the facts as you see them. Others will disagree, but that is why LGF exits, to provide a forum for disparate opinions.

I knew the AWB piece was wrong and found it funny in part because it was so wrong. I laugh at dead baby jokes too. I leave it to other vets to criticize markos for his statement.
As a whole the Daily Kos community has been very supportive of LGF and Charles lately and it might be time to let bygones be bygones.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because I’m completely fed up with the loonies on the right — and I am — that it means I’m suddenly OK with saying “screw them” about fellow Americans who are horribly murdered.
I give Daily Kos some credit for cleaning up the craziness at their site. They have cleaned it up in large part. You don’t see the ugly antisemitic diaries that used to be very common.
I appreciate the sane people who I may not agree with on every political point, but who aren’t deranged. And I’d like to see more dialog between the left and right, and less demonization.
But I repeat — this is a two-way street. Just because I don’t want to join forces with the religious right and the paleocons and the fascists, doesn’t mean I’m suddenly just fine with the ultra-leftists.
There are things I’ve learnt about some of the people there that I’d wish I hadn’t learnt.
It would be nice if people wouldn’t do horrible things for reasons that “seemed good at the time”.
It sounds as if Gus has made some of those horrible decisions, as I have (in different ways); and whatever he’s done to you, I hope he has the guts to apologise for it.
Chuckling about purges at LGF while the delete button sends five years of posts down the memory hole. These are moments they can be proud of now and later.
Moe I could not agree more. This blog out of all the other blogs in the past…Gop, Lgf Watch and etc never got so under his skin as this one. Why? He booted us to the curb and we actually know his history.

Bob – it is hard to explain why it hits people so hard when they get banned, but I’ve kinda decided that it is the sense of injustice even more than the betrayal. The inability to go back and say, “Hey! wait a minute!” Having a place to come and get it all out is a good thing – and a healthy part of moving on.
It’s also become a wonderful place to reconnect with ‘friends’ you made and want to stay in touch with from over there. In many cases now, the bonds are stronger, many of us now have email connections so that it cannot happen again..
LGF as a topic of conversation may not be a problem much longer. He must be about done. Banning people for lurking, blocking entire IP ranges. It’s pretty funny really. Sad. But funny.

I didn’t have a lot of animosity when I was banned, as I hadn’t been there long enough to grow roots.
What bothered me more was the way they treated the new folks, baiting them, then swarming them (as they did me) without warrant, and then gloating about it.
I bought into the smear job they did on Rodan & Savage also, before I came over here to see for myself.
I didn’t have as many roots as a lot of folks there but I hated the way they treated people when it started going sour. The nonstop attacks on the Right finally woke me up. I saw that this wasn’t just a point of view he was pushing, it was a pack of lies calculated to harm my/our side. There was no living with that.

My error was to assume it was a free and open discussion about world events. I responded to what I considered to be an offensive comment with some barbed sarcasm. BFD. At least I was booted early, and I have no regrets about what I said.
I found myself starting to hold back my opinions to be ’safe’ and using a lot of sarcasm to fly under the radar. I didn’t like living that way so after it became obvious that the purges were not going to let up, I walked. No regrets at all.
Funny. I never got to that point, since I never saw the hidden taboo topics, nor did I know who the untouchables were. I was naive… signing up and “flouncing” within ten days without realizing it. I had more fun in the lounge.
I thought I was still learning the ‘culture’ at LGF, not realizing it was changing under my feet. I’d lurked there for three years, never able to catch an open registration period. I lasted a year before I walked.
The community that was LGF is here and at C2 and a few other places.
Charles is just deleting the comments because he feels that is the only way he can reply. He’ll pick up his toys and go home. It’s rather amateurish. It will make his blog look like swiss cheese. He might as well delete any post 7 days or older. It has the same effect. He is acting like a bad spouse lol. If he keeps on this track he’ll walk away from his blog at some point.
I’ve banned people in online chat before. My standard was if they were just anally spamming topics to be jerks they were gone. Most everyone else of any type of conversation was ok to stay. The more intense ones self banned themselves.
At LGF you have pretty reasonable solid people getting banned out of the community there just because they aren’t reflections of Charles misguided logic.

Checking the web this morning, the big story is Obama’s Olympic Debacle. The consensus so far is that for the first time, Obama’s failure has broken out of inside the Beltway policy issues to a topic that many more average Americans care about, Sports. Obama’s loss is the lead story on the sports pages and the sports channels. That is going to cost Him.
Also, the most plausible explanation for Obama going to Copenhagen was that the Chicago bid was in trouble, he knew it, and he thought he could fly in and save the day with his patented bullshit. If so, then I repeat that both he and his advisers are numbskulls.

You must admit it was a little easier back then. You have done a commendable job of asking the more extreme factions here to get lost.
It didn’t just get better on its own, and there was a reason why extremists had an easier time posting their crap at LGF back then: I didn’t have the tools I have now.
The advance of web technology, especially Ajax technology, has enabled me to moderate LGF in a way that simply was not possible a few years ago.
When this site started getting popular and there were suddenly thousands of comments every day, it was completely out of control. I could not read all those comments, there was no easy way for people to report extremist crap, and the constant press of events and news stories made it impossible for one person to deal with it all.
I now have software tools that are a quantum leap better than the primitive techniques available a few years ago, and that’s a huge reason why the extremists are now being pushed out.
What a load of crap that only the new lizards would swallow. Charles was the prime instigator of the nasty stuff. Here is a post of his from 2002, “The Islamic State of Holland”, which he had now taken down from the archives:

A) You change the direction your blog is going 180 degrees (in this case, it means completely abandon one set of principles and adopt the diametrically opposed principles like light and dark, but I digress)
B) You ban people from the first iteration because, unlike you, they have not abandoned their principles or core beliefs (doesn’t matter which of the two were your core beliefs, at one point you abandoned one for the other — again, I digress)

So, naturally

I knew the AWB piece was wrong and found it funny in part because it was so wrong. I laugh at dead baby jokes too. I leave it to other vets to criticize markos for his statement.
As a whole the Daily Kos community has been very supportive of LGF and Charles lately and it might be time to let bygones be bygones.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because I’m completely fed up with the loonies on the right — and I am — that it means I’m suddenly OK with saying “screw them” about fellow Americans who are horribly murdered.
I give Daily Kos some credit for cleaning up the craziness at their site. They have cleaned it up in large part. You don’t see the ugly antisemitic diaries that used to be very common.
I appreciate the sane people who I may not agree with on every political point, but who aren’t deranged. And I’d like to see more dialog between the left and right, and less demonization.
But I repeat — this is a two-way street. Just because I don’t want to join forces with the religious right and the paleocons and the fascists, doesn’t mean I’m suddenly just fine with the ultra-leftists.

Bob – it is hard to explain why it hits people so hard when they get banned, but I’ve kinda decided that it is the sense of injustice even more than the betrayal. The inability to go back and say, “Hey! wait a minute!” Having a place to come and get it all out is a good thing – and a healthy part of moving on.
It’s also become a wonderful place to reconnect with ‘friends’ you made and want to stay in touch with from over there. In many cases now, the bonds are stronger, many of us now have email connections so that it cannot happen again..
LGF as a topic of conversation may not be a problem much longer. He must be about done. Banning people for lurking, blocking entire IP ranges. It’s pretty funny really. Sad. But funny.
Besides, chronicling a trainwreck is almost a work of art.

The community that was LGF is here and at C2 and a few other places.
Charles is just deleting the comments because he feels that is the only way he can reply. He’ll pick up his toys and go home. It’s rather amateurish. It will make his blog look like swiss cheese. I’ve banned people in online chat before. My standard was if they were just anally spamming topics to be jerks they were gone. Most everyone else of any type of conversation was ok to stay. The more intense ones self banned themselves.
At LGF you have pretty reasonable solid people getting banned out of the community there just because they aren’t reflections of Charles misguided logic.

Checking the web this morning, the big story is Obama’s Olympic Debacle. The consensus so far is that for the first time, Obama’s failure has broken out of inside the Beltway policy issues to a topic that many more average Americans care about, Sports. Obama’s loss is the lead story on the sports pages and the sports channels. That is going to cost Him.
Also, the most plausible explanation for Obama going to Copenhagen was that the Chicago bid was in trouble, he knew it, and he thought he could fly in and save the day with his patented bullshit. If so, then I repeat that both he and his advisers are numbskulls.
