Sunday NFL sports thread

This is week 2 of the NFL season and there are some interesting match-ups. New England will square off against the NY Jets. Mark Sanchez looked impressive in week 1, however, now he will face a big test. The Patriot’s Defense, although not as great as it was in the mid 2000’s, still is formidable as we saw last week against Buffalo. Is Sanchez a star in the making, or was it a one week fluke?

Sunday night’s game is the one I am really interested in as it pits the NY Giants against the Dallas Cowboys. This is an NFC East showdown and the first Regular Season game in the Cowboy’s new stadium. The Giants Defense preformed well last week, but they face a test. Dallas has an awesome Offense and their Defense is good as well. Eli Manning will have to step up to the plate with the Offense and score some points.

The Saga of NFL Drama Queen: Brett Farve will lead the Vikings against the hapless Detroit Lions. This probably will be a rout since Detroit is a joke of a team. Farve has yet to face a really good team, it will interesting when he faces Green Bay later in the season.

Here are a good analysis of Week 2.

Discuss any games you want here or other games as well.

In 2 weeks I will be live blogging from a sports bar by my house, so that is something to look forward to.

Enjoy the games and have a cold beer as well. Trash talking is encouraged!

I hate the Giants, but I REALLY hate the Cowboys.

    Go Eli and crew!

As long as you let Jason Witten score at least once!

Huge All Blacks fan myself. Have a friend in ChristChurch who was visiting and got me up at 5:00 a.m. to travel to a sports bar on Stanyan Street to watch the World Cup in 1999. When those were over, we stuck around and watched the Cal game. He was laughing at the basis for the penalties.

    Somali Islamists ‘ban’ UN books

Somali schools should stop using “un-Islamic” textbooks distributed by the United Nations, a spokesman for the Islamist group al-Shabab has said.

    [...]

Our reporter says some schools use textbooks from Saudi Arabia.

Al-Shabab is accused of having links to al-Qaeda.

On Thursday, it carried out a double suicide bombing, killing 17 African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu.

Somalia has not had an effective national government since 1991.

Years of fighting and anarchy have left some three million people – half the population – needing food aid.

    How islamic of them.

Yes it is, they are giving it here in Tampa. The other game I am watching is the Bills-Bucs game. Currently at the half it’s 20-14 Bills.

For those of you who follow this sort of thing, a little tidbit you might not have heard.
The huge scoreboard at the new Cowboys stadium has been discussed at great length, but seldom is it mentioned that the NFL approved the screen before it was built, and approved it after it was complete. The little tidbit is this, the NFL quietly admitted that they said the screen would be acceptable at 85ft. above the surface, but they based their decision on…nothing.
Just grabbed the number out of thin air.
The Cowboys put it at 90ft. anyway.

    That is all, carry on.

I bow to the Bills today. They shut the run down, and held it together.

Damn! my Bills won today! Hooray!

  129. 129 | September 20, 2009 5:38 pm

I’ll be keeping an eye on the Cowboys/Giants game (between intervals of The Simpsons, that is).

  130. 130 | September 20, 2009 5:56 pm

About four minutes left in the 1st quarter; Cowboys up 7-3; Giants have possession.

  131. 131 | September 20, 2009 6:14 pm

Nuts! Giants are up 10-7, but the Cowboys are at least keeping the Giants from getting another TD.

Update: Giants got another FG; they’re ahead 13-7 (2nd quarter now).

  132. 132 | September 20, 2009 6:31 pm

Cowboys scored a TD on 3rd down at the Giants’ 1-yd line; got the extra point, lead 14-13 (9 minutes to go in 1st half).

  133. 133 | September 20, 2009 6:43 pm

Giants have possession on their own 41-yd line (three and a half minutes left in the 1st half)

  134. 134 | September 20, 2009 6:46 pm

Two minute warning in the first half; Giants only gained five yards on their drive, and will have to punt.

  135. coldwarrior
    135 | September 20, 2009 6:55 pm

giants need to win this or rodan is gonna be a grump

    ;)

  136. 136 | September 20, 2009 7:07 pm

Well, right now, the Giants are ahead 20-17; they got a TD on an interception, and the Cowboys on the next drive got a FG.

  137. 137 | September 20, 2009 7:08 pm

Correction, Giants got possession on an interception, then drove to the end zone for a TD. My mistake.

  138. coldwarrior
    138 | September 20, 2009 7:12 pm

it will be interesting to see how the giants do this season now that the problems with plexico arent around the clubhouse,

’cause he’s in da big howse!

    i crack myself up!

  139. 139 | September 20, 2009 7:18 pm

    re: #138 by coldwarrior

I have a hard time believing this Plaxico guy’s talent could’ve possibly been worth the migraines he caused the Giants.

  140. 140 | September 20, 2009 7:26 pm

2nd half is now under way, and the Giants are in Cowboys territory.

  141. 141 | September 20, 2009 7:28 pm

Giants are inside the red zone, at the Cowboys’ 11-yd line

  142. 142 | September 20, 2009 7:30 pm

Giants missed a 29-yd FG attempt after not getting beyond the Cowboys’ 11-yd line; Giants still lead 20-17

    re: #139 by Morgan

he has talent…he’s just a problem child.

that’s why the rooney’s got rid of him…he was a horrible fit in the steeler’s organization

  144. 144 | September 20, 2009 7:51 pm

Cowboys are on the Giants’ 3-yd line; 2nd down and goal

  145. 145 | September 20, 2009 7:53 pm

Tony Romo ran 3 yds, for a TD; extra point is good, and the Cowboys now lead 24-20 (3:32 to go in 3rd quarter)

  146. Bordm
    146 | September 20, 2009 7:53 pm

    Great call by Jason Garret.

  147. 147 | September 20, 2009 8:09 pm

Giants are back in the lead with another TD, 27-24 early in the 4th quarter

  148. 148 | September 20, 2009 8:18 pm

Good catch by Manningham of the Giants just now; they’re in Cowboys territory again

  149. 149 | September 20, 2009 8:28 pm

Giants had to settle for another FG, up 30-24; Cowboys are now on the Giants’ 7-yd line

  150. 150 | September 20, 2009 8:30 pm

Woo-hoo! Cowboys tie it up again with a TD! They got the extra point and now lead 31-30 (3:40 to go in the game)

  151. Bordm
    151 | September 20, 2009 8:30 pm

Nice drive by Dallas. Another great game so far.

  152. 152 | September 20, 2009 8:40 pm

Getting real close; less than a minute to go and the Giants are 40 yds. away

  153. 153 | September 20, 2009 8:44 pm

Giants are gambling on a FG attempt with 4 seconds to go

  154. 154 | September 20, 2009 8:46 pm

    Cowboys called timeout!

  155. 155 | September 20, 2009 8:47 pm

Giants won on the FG attempt, 33-31. Exciting game overall; too bad the Cowboys couldn’t win it.

  156. 156 | September 20, 2009 9:18 pm

    re: #155 by Morgan

Eli had a QB rating of 100, and went 25/38 for 330 Yards, 2 Touchdowns and o Ints.
