Why Conservatives are the real Liberals

Here is a good commentary given emailed to me. It’s thesis are that Conservatives are the real Liberals. I agree, most on the Right are open minded and like to lean new ideas. Progressives are narrow minded and have a set of predetermined beliefs that don’t allow them to change.

I flipped on C-Span 2 at seven this morning to see Nation writer D.D. Guttenplan promote his hagiography of the Soviet agent and Communist camp follower I.F. Stone, to a group of aging Vermont radicals with similar political fantasies. In the  break, C-Span advertised its segment at 9 featuring Guttenplan’s boss, Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, which turned out to be a panel promoting socialism along with a Nation collection of diatribes against the Bush years and the free market economy. In between there was a conservative French economist, Gary Sorman talking about his new book. Every time I watch C-Span I am struck by its fairness and by the fact that only a conservative Republican and private corporations could have created it. C-Span of course is owned by the private cable companies and is the design of Brian Lamb, a Nixon White House operative who was dispatched by Nixon in the early years of PBS to attempt to get its directors to obey the law that created it and make it “fair, objective and balanced” — to use the words of its authorization act. Of course, Lamb failed because liberals are closet totalitarians who can’t stand to have a conservative in the room. Witness the thirty year purge of conservatives from university faculties to just take one example.

The Left is Totalitarian in nature and thinking. They suffer from tunnel vision and can’t think outside the box. Their blind belief in their Progressive ideas are their weakness. The Right can exploit this against them.

Watch and you will see examples everywhere – which blogs are most likely moderated? Leftist/Progressive blogs? Which ones ban dissenters? Leftist/Progressive blogs. Time and time again.

It’s also true that the left is using publicly funded airwaves – think “Democracy Now” on public access channels, think PBS – it’s very sad.

“Demockery Now” should have to pay its own way. When you are big enough to buy ads in TIME Magazine, you have outgrown the public incubator.

Orwell was spot on to the tactics of the Left.

MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC: think sheeple…….

Yes, it was Squealer. A little awkwardly, as though not quite used to supporting his considerable bulk in that position, but with perfect balance, he was strolling across the yard. And a moment later, out from the door of the farmhouse came a long file of pigs, all walking on their hind legs. Some did it better than others, one or two were even a trifle unsteady and looked as though they would have liked the support of a stick, but every one of them made his way right round the yard successfully. And finally there was a tremendous baying of dogs and a shrill crowing from the black cockerel, and out came Napoleon himself, majestically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side, and with his dogs gambolling round him.

He carried a whip in his trotter.

There was a deadly silence. Amazed, terrified, huddling together, the animals watched the long line of pigs march slowly round the yard. It was as though the world had turned upside-down. Then there came a moment when the first shock had worn off and when, in spite of everything-in spite of their terror of the dogs, and of the habit, developed through long years, of never complaining, never criticising, no matter what happened-they might have uttered some word of protest. But just at that moment, as though at a signal, all the sheep burst out into a tremendous bleating of-

“Four legs good, two legs better! Four legs good, two legs better! Four legs good, two legs better!”

It went on for five minutes without stopping. And by the time the sheep had quieted down, the chance to utter any protest had passed, for the pigs had marched back into the farmhouse.

Your comment is spot-on. The founders were liberal in the original sense of the word and the supporters of the totalitarian king were conservative. However, over the years, and particularly following the turn of the 20′th century, somehow the term “liberal” became enmeshed in the statist movements of various groups — Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Truman, Johnson, etc. turned the term on its head by advocating for such things as the progressive income tax (i.e. punish success), the entire New Deal, and Johnson’s Great Society (War on Poverty, guns & butter, etc.).

Now the left doesn’t even like the term “liberal” because of the baggage it carries with it. They now refer to themselves as “progressives” which is just another usurpation of a different term. What they really are is statists — people who believe that the government is the solution to every problem, the best arbiter of societal fairness, and the great leveler of the playing field. At least they believe that as long as they are the ones in power and making the rules. If they find themselves in the minority, then not so much.

In European politics, the term “liberal” means more what “libertarian” does here. “Conservatives” are Monarchical Statists while the Socialists are “egalitarian” Statists. Conservative in the American sense (i.e. free market capitalist, traditional religious, individualistic, etc.) doesn’t exactly exist, but “liberal” would probably be the closest.

  32. 32 | August 31, 2009 6:16 am

    re: #30 by Iron Fist

    From the article:

“Some of the most prominent and respected handicappers can now envision an election in which Democrats suffer double-digit losses in the House — not enough to provide the 40 seats necessary to return the GOP to power but enough to put them within striking distance.”

It’d be interesting to see the GOP pick up a ton of seats, but not quite enough to take back the Congress. That would, I think, be worse for the Dems in 2012 than losing Congress in 2010 would be.

Back in 1994, the GOP took both houses of Congress, and I think this enabled Clinton to hang onto the White House in 1996. The Republican victory in 1994 forced Clinton to moderate, to move back to the centre from the far left, and after two years of welfare reform, etc. people forgot what a radical nut he’d been his first two years in office, and re-elected him (of course, nominating Bob “It’s my turn” Dole didn’t help the GOP, either).

This time around, if the GOP makes significant gains but doesn’t quite take Congress back in 2010, the Dems and 0bama won’t have as much of an incentive to change their ways. They would still try to ram through their radical agenda, and continue to alienate more of the American people.

Obama is both less intelligent and more arrogant than Bill Clinton, so he’d be more likely to consider a near-loss of Congress to the GOP to be a fluke, rather than a genuine message from the American people. He’d just keep trucking along, as would Pelosi and Reid (assuming he manages to squeak out re-election, which doesn’t look likely right now), and they’d set themselves up for a complete sweep by the GOP in 2012.

The GOP victory in 1994 was the best thing that ever happened to President Clinton. It forced him to move to the center (which was his natural DLC political base) and made him into an underdog. Then the whole disaster about shutting down the government worked to his advantage. The Gingrich congress eventually forgot why they were elected.

of course, nominating Bob “It’s my turn” Dole didn’t help the GOP, either).

That may be the only hope the USA has got. Although the democrats seem to have learned not to touch the “third rail” of gun control (if they were really smart, they would try and do away with some of the stupider laws already on the books. The Republicans would shit themselves), we still have the fartherest Left Administration in US history. While Obama hasn’t announced his Leftism in a firey paramilitary assault on US civillians, he has set his dogs on the “evil” CIA, attempted to ram through the largest tax increase in history, and, of course, take over one sixth of the national economy. His plans are so far Left he may not be able to get them through a Democrat Congress.

This time. But if the Democrats pay no price for his adventurism, then who is to say what will happen? The only hope is that the Republicans are returned to power, and that they learn to resist Obama and the Left more effectively than they have in the past. Obama might, as Bill Clinton did, track towards the Center, and a great many evils may be adverted. If not, we can hope that he is a one-term failure, and that he does as little damage as possible to the nation.

I would tend to agree, but one thing to say about McCain is that I don’t think he won on the basis of GOP voters as much as he did on crossover voters who really didn’t have any business voting in Republican primaries to begin with. The GOP didn’t really even have a closed primary until after it was pretty much already decided – with Dem and Indie votes.

The GOP needs to get serious about primary reforms. All primaries, on one day, closed to registered Republicans only. Decertify the results of any state that doesn’t play ball.

The GOP really stepped on their dick by not persuing election reform in the wake of the 2000 debacle. Illegal votes help the Democrats in every election. There was a chance to try and weed them out, and the Republicans let it slip away.

I keep saying it, because it is important. The Democrats realize politics is a knife fight. It is brutal, dirty, mean, and nasty, and all that matters is winning. The Republicans think it is some kind of Marquis of Queensbury match where decorum and politisse are significant.

That is why the Republicans keep losing, or, if they win, they fail to exploit their victory.

That is why the Republicans keep losing, or, if they win, they fail to exploit their victory.

True. Time to break out the brass knuckles.

Electoral reform is a huge need. If/when the GOP ever gets back in power, there needs to be a federal picture ID requirement for elections in all 50 states (the 14th amendment provides the justification for not relying on federalism in this case). If you’re not a citizen, you don’t vote. If you don’t live in the precinct, you don’t vote there. If you’re dead, you don’t vote. Seems simple enough, eh?

The Democrats routinely defraud the vote and steal elections. They nearly did it in 2000 in Florida, even going so far as to have a partisanly packed state Supreme Court flat out overturn settled state law when it wasn’t convenient for them (did this in New Jersey too….that’s how Frank Lautenburg got back in). The Dems are just a dirty, dirty, dirty party, and it’s time to take the garbage out.

No, it’s because I don’t trust him to be truly conservative. He seems rather, ah, lizardesque in a chameleonish sort of way.

Ah, this is nice. The new Rasmussen poll has Obama tanking. Overall, there’s a 41% strong disapproval rating, while there is only a 30% strong approval rating. That means Obama is holding his base, but even independants are getting tired of his shit. The more complete breakdown in the report backs this up.

Another interesting tidbit is that 57% of the voters would throw all of Congress out and start over from scratch. you can count me in the 57%. I can’t think of one “leader” from either Party that I’d really want to keep.

I know a lot of Republicans (after all, I live in Colorado Springs). I don’t know a single person who voted for John McCain.

I know quite a few who voted against Obama, however.

McCain was foisted upon Republicans by the media and the exploitation of the open primary system.

You really are a dumb douche nozzel – there was a distinct lack of enthusiasm for Juan McAmnesty McCain and his lover Miss Lindsey Graham (RINO of South Carolina). We voted for him because for all his faults, he was infiniteley more qualified then Blunder Boy who is now sleeping in the White House. Also McCain loves America while The Won despises it. McCain would not have shipped all those millions over to Gaza and gone on the Islamic world apology tour.

I can’t understand your muffled words when you talk out of your ass.

Bwah ha ha ha. Bachmann? You probably want Palin to run with this psycho as her VP huh? OMG let’s just forget about elections in 2012 and go right into Obama’s second term, that’ll save you wack jobs some embarrassment, lol.

I can think of a few. DeMint, Bachmann, Pence, Inhofe, Coburn, McClintock, McCotter to name a few. I think most of the GOPers are decent – it’s just that we always hear about the bi-partisan, reach-across-the-aisle types like McCain, Graham, Snowe, etc. and they help to tar the GOP with the same brush rightfully reserved for the Dimocrats.

At the rate they’re going, I wouldn’t be surprised if 2012 turns out like 1980 did, with one or more serious challengers for the Democrat nomination.
