There are tens of thousands of protests in China each year, and most of them have nothing to do with clashes between ethnicities. Mishandled like the one in Urumqi, however, almost any one of them can spread fast, from city to city and across vast regions. That’s the most important lesson to be learned from the events in Xinjiang this week.

The ChiComs certainly proved their lousy track record twenty years ago in Beijing and in Tibet. The argument you speak of about Muslim protests is one I would agree with.

The best example of Muslim protests being far from peaceful was their reaction to the Muhammad cartoons published in Denmark. It ultimately resulted in Christians being killed by the protestors.

I expect stability will return to that part of China soon enough.

The Chinese do not have a good track record dealing with protests. However, an argument can also be made that Muslim protests do not have a good track record of remaining peaceful.

With the available information being limited at this point I support those that were not involved and hope that some form of stability returns to the region.
