Obama vs. Sarkozy over burka

Obama and French President Sarkozy are on a collision course over the issue of banning Burkas. France is looking into banning this symbol of Islamic supremacy. Obama has sated it is his duty to defend Muslims and their interests. This article gives a good analysis of this divergence over the whole issue.

In his June speech in Cairo, U. S. President Barack Obama said that Westerners should “avoid dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear.” On the other hand, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says that burkas and niqabs, both of which cover the face, are a “debasement” of women and shouldn’t be permitted in France.

So who’s right?

I stand with the French on this one.

and just because I want to be a pain to Chuckles…

    Over at 1.0…

The wife of Britain’s new’s MI6 foreign intelligence chief, Sir John Sawers, published intimate photos and family details on Facebook.

And the security breach isn’t the worst thing about this story — because her entries on Facebook also revealed that Sawers’ brother-in-law is a friend of notorious Holocaust denier David Irving.

So, the brother in law KNOWS a guy who denies the holocaust?

    Oh, the horror!

And What does the lizard clown headline this crap with?

Britain’s New Intelligence Chief Tied to Holocaust Denier

Unfrakingbelievable. Now, I’m no friend of fascists, but to call out a guy because his relative knows a guy?

C’mon! We ALL “know a guy” with skeletons in the closet. Betcha even the bikerider over at 1.0…who I might add LIKES to ride without a seat.

I believe that banning the burka outright is wrong.

I’m not sure that means I agree with President Obama however.

That’s a tough call. The reason for the Burqua and niquab alone (to proclaim muslim superiority) is reason enough for the French to strike back. However, denying religious expression is also potentially chilling. The French have, however, in the past banned wearing of the crucifix by various teachers and other state workers, therefore this is not exactly a one-sided act on the part of the French secular government.

The need to be able to identify people in public would also seem to be a compelling reason to ban walking around in the islamic equivalent of ski masks.

Fine. Here is where I stand on this issue. If a woman chooses to wear it, fine with me. If she doesn’t want to but her male relatives force it upon her, make sure there are laws in place to protect her choice. Also, again, wear it. BUT, realize that you will be forced to remove it, in the presence of men and other infidels, when you enter a courthouse, jail, bank, and anyplace else it is deemed important to see ones face.Maybe if these women know there are rules put into place about not HAVING to wear it, they would choose not to wihtout fear of repercussion. Also, maybe then they will all get pissed off and rise up against the males in their society and kick their asses for forcing it upon them. One more thing, Obi doesn’t need to say a damn thing about it. He is supposed to protect MY interests and safety. The “muslim world” can take care of their own. THAT was not in his job description.

That is a very good point. This is not Obama’s battle, anymore than meddling in the internal affairs of The Honduras given the circumstances. He wasn’t willing to make any statements regarding Iran’s stolen elections, so why all this meddling in these other affairs?

    re: #3 by WrathofG-d

I agree with a caveat; in situations of security the burka cannot be worn: (boarding any public conveyance, entering any government building and there should be an exception to discrimination regulations for anyone who wishes to ban those who wear the burka from their establishment.)

    P.S.
Today, in the U.S., if you walk into a bank in the middle of summer (or even winter in someplaces) with a tightly tied hood or facemask, you will be stopped and the presumption will be that you are up to no good. Likewise other types of places where being masked in some way is suspicious on it’s face. (pun intended)

Since the burqa is not (according to many of those who supposedly are in charge of interpreting the koran) an intrinsic part of the worship of Allah then it does not create the same precedent to say require the removal of the kippah or other coverings that other religions require. (those other coverings btw DO NOT cover the face thus allowing IDENTIFICATION)

    O.T.
My most major concern about the future re: fundamental Islam is that there is no central interpretive body or single authority (such as jews and christians have) that can establish orthodoxy or what is to be considered “true” Islam.

The biggest problem,to me, with confronting terrorist Islamists is that Islam can be interpreted in one way by some and another way by others. This means that to combat the radical death cultist, we must lump them all together. This aspect of unfairness goes against the grain of most who believe in liberty and freedom and the right of people to be left alone such as; Americans, Israelis and others, and as a result our true enemies hide amongst the (mostly) innocent believers until they are ready to strike. We are left (by design) with the only solution to our dilemma is to declare war against all muslims. Which of course is what Al Queda and others have engineered to happen.

    One more btw;

The true sides in this “war” we’re in is not one of muslim against christian or jew.

It’s one of slavery and tyranny against freedom and liberty.

Okay, something else is causing the 200-comment bug. It isn’t what I thought it was, so I’m going to have to do a little more work on it before I can declare victory against it.

So, Under Obama, does the Burkha get allowed for Driver’s License pictures? Perhaps include NOT allowing the Burkha as a part of “Hate Crime” legislation?

    Burkas in public, offend me.
If they want to wear a hefty bag at home, fine.
However, I shouldn’t have to be offended by them, and guessing if it is really a man wearing a bomb, or running from justice.
In public, they are just plain nasty.

I think we’ll find that, like Clinton, he’ll gut the Military (starting with this nuclear weapon drawdown he’s working on with Russia) then spend military might of what’s left on crazy crap to cover up internal dustups.

Well some brave Conservative could take a hit for the team by coming out in FAVOR of burqas. Then the outcry against them would be heard far and wide. Too bad about the guy taking the hit though.

Sometimes you just have to laugh cause crying is just too draining: It’s amazing how the VERY PEOPLE who will be the first to be lined up for the ultimate choice, choose Islam or die, (gays, women, libertines like Hugh Hefner, Jews like Chucky Schumer, atheists, DARWINIANS!!!, et al) are the very people who seem to ignore the implications of surrender to Islam.

Do the liberals see some sort of advantage in Islam? Is it just an extension of the “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”? (The enemy being Christians, fundamental Jews, Catholics, Conservatives).

    W. T. F. ?

Thirty years ago, I could not imagine that we would be in the situation we are today. It boggles the mind.

    I agree.
We have what, fifteen hundred nukes, and Russia has twenty two hundred. Draw down thirty percent, and we still each have enough to put on a serious hurtin’.
Defense tech, though, is something we can’t have enough of, when it comes to intercepting in bound missiles.

  31. 31 | July 6, 2009 10:28 pm

    re: #30 by no2liberals

the problem is what Obama will allow us to get rid of.

There is no reason to get rid of our nuclear weapons. So…. why do we have every liberal, year after year, demanding that we do so?

I don’t trust whatever their reasons are.
