The religion of peace in action…

A video grab from CCTV shows people turning over a police car in Urumqi, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China July 5, 2009. Locals took to the streets of Xinjiang's regional capital, Urumqi, burning and smashing vehicles and confronting security forces, following a protest there to denounce government handling of a clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in far southern China in late June, when two Uighurs died. China has called a riot that shook the capital of restive western Xinjiang region on Sunday a plot by exiled members of the Uighur people, after at least three people died in the latest eruption of ethnic unrest there.URUMQI, China (Reuters) – At least 140 people have been killed in rioting in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region, with the government blaming exiled separatists for the traditionally Muslim area’s worst case of unrest in years.

Hundreds of people have been arrested, the official Xinhua news agency said, after protestors from the Uighur minority took to the streets of the regional capital on Sunday, burning and smashing vehicles and shops, and clashing with anti-riot police.

    Hola, people!

I’m doing some tech work on the site now, so if things get a little wonky, just refresh the page until it looks normal.

Among the changes I’m rolling out today is a fix to stop threads from breaking at 200 comments.

If there are any other bugs that need immediate attention, let me know.

gclaghorn~ The break only happens for admins – staaarange.

But — refresh on the reply button in IE is the only other one people email about.

    I’m backkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s my take, I side with China. I hope the Chinese put these Muslims in their place.
I support anyone who stands against Islam, so my views are consistent.

Since nobody seems to have pointed it out yet, I guess it’s up to me.

The situation in Urmuqi is NOT another case of jihad. Yes, the Uighurs are mostly muslim, but that’s not what this is about. The conflict is actually centuries old, but really got kick-started with the communist takeover of China. Mao and his merry band instituted a program to mass migrate Han (ethnic Chinese) into this and other areas (think Tibet) to drown out the native populations. In Urmuqi and Korla (to the southwest), you hardly ever see Uighurs in the city. All the power and decent jobs are held by Han, who dominate business, government and everything else. The Uighurs, like the Tibetans, are second class citizens in their own land. THAT’S what this is about. The Uighurs did not submit well to the Russians, either, when they controlled that area.

    ADDENDUM

Poster “trapeze” over at Conservative Talk has some well-chosen comments on this matter here:

His brother was a missionary in Urmuqi for a number of years and knew the situation first-hand.
