Dave Weigel Digs Through LGF’s Archives Looking for Dirt
Dave Weigel takes a few shots at me today, by digging up some old LGF posts (I’m getting used to this technique, from all sides): The Washington Independent » A Blast from Charles Johnson’s Past.
The posts in which I linked to Pamela Geller were from a different time, before she tipped over into non-stop craziness; in any case, one of them wishes her a happy one-year anniversary, and the other links to her coverage of the “Stand with Israel” rally in New York, and in both cases I really don’t see what I’m supposed to regret about them. People change, times change, and so do opinions; the only person who doesn’t change his or her opinions is a blind ideologue.
Weigel also links to my short positive review of one of Robert Spencer’s books. There’s some context missing in what he writes, however; at that point, Spencer was still keeping up a front of staying away from Eurofascists, posting several times at his blog that he renounced associations with groups like Vlaams Belang, and supporting me in my stance against them. He has since changed that position for the worse. I suppose I should have seen it earlier, but sometimes people conceal their true beliefs.
The only post Weigel dug up that I honestly regret was one from 2004 expressing qualified approval of Vlaams Blok (the neofascist group that morphed into Vlaams Belang), when they were banned by the Belgian government. My only excuse is ignorance; at that point I had not looked into their past, but I had looked into their adversary, the openly pro-jihad Arab European League, and thought Vlaams Blok was at least a semi-legitimate opponent. Needless to say, in the five years since that post I’ve learned otherwise.
(I should point out, though, that Weigel calls them the “Dutch party Vlaams Blok,” so apparently I’m not the only one who wasn’t well-informed. They’re Belgian, Dave.)
One more comment on this subject: this hasn’t been a sudden change at LGF. My refusal to associate with fascist groups is not new. It’s a core principle and always has been, and that’s why, when I saw the so-called “anti-jihad” bloggers starting to hook up with European neofascist groups two years ago, I could not remain silent.
The fact remains Charles you are a backstabber. You cant’ stand other opinions and no one may criticize you. You are a Jazz Musician, so your ego is sky high. In the real world people get criticize, the world isn’t you blog.

This really is the hard part, amateur historian that I am, Europe is a sub-continent of small Nation-States, most with a clearly defined local culture and language.
Belgium is an odd one out – it is Dutch and French, with just enough German to say that it isn’t just a couple of loose ends of France and the Netherlands, Waloons and Flemish.
Go figure that self-described patriots in a nation-state would appear to be nationalists, even appearing racist, rather than trans-nationalists.
That Europe, with its tight little groups of unique nation-states would be so socialists may seem to be a bit of anomaly to Americans, but that social / communitarian policy is so much more attractive the closer to home it is – even the US historically gave the Fed little power in social issues, the States more so, and the most to one’s local parish…
So many of American ‘progressives’ want socialism at the highest levels, while the conservatives would prefer it to be at the lowest.
This is why right-wingers are so often labeled National-Socialist / Nazis, because progressive / Tranzis cannot see the forest for the tree.
Charles is an actual fascist, no “crypto” about it. It goes against American values and the US Constitution to make a party illegal. Joining the Communist Party, KKK, Nazi Party, or NAMBLA isn’t illegal in itself, at least in free countries. To ban a party makes all the members nonpersons, without the basic rights of every other citizen. They can’t speak, assemble or run for office. It’s a status offense, a label basically, which makes someone a criminal in perpetuity, whether they did anything other than join the party or not.
Now that the mask is off Charles can ban himself. He’s a fascist and there’s no doubt about it.

These ceaseless attacks on Charles are disgusting. I’ve been following this blog since 2004 and I’ve yet to see Charles put a foot wrong. In many a way, Charles’s greatest achievement is that he practises that most Hellenic of all virtues – moderation, that moderation which is not the state of being luke warm but the state opposed to exaggeration and excess. The moderation and balance on LGF, which Charles has displayed so consistently, has helped greatly to prevent me from suddenly tipping into excess myself at some stage or other. In this respect, I have occasionally learnt virtue from Charles. One final reflection. With the passage of time, the internet seems to me to be transforming into a dank lair of irrepressible insanity. People seem to be giving into their dark sides, to express egregious and extreme ideas. The more they do so, the more I find myself repelled by the internet community. But the more repelled I become, the more I find myself resorting to LGF so that I may enjoy this small oasis of sanity. Apart from LGF, the net is, as far as I’m concerned, Amazon, Bookdepository and Perseus(Go on, visit it, it’s a jewel of a site). Thanks for the ἀρετή, Charles.

I did some “dirt digging” myself, and it appears that there is another Geller thread CJ apparently regrets posting. This is one that Weigel couldn’t find, because he scrubbed it.
Search the LGF archives for July 29, 2007, and you will see that “The Arc of a Conspiracy Theory” is listed as LGF article # 26456, and directly below that is “Contador Wins Tour De France” and by URL is listed as article # 26454.
What’s missing, of course, is # 26455 , which many of us LGF veterans would’ve recognised as the enthusiastically posted link to THIS.
In that thread, Geller links back to LGF, and states that she’s “arrived” and that the “the comments are better than the pic”.
Comments that are now down the memory hole, that is. Opinions do more than change at LGF. Apparently they vanish, too.

Then there was the Gulf Coast Pundit – American Infidel spat: reaganite, Ann, Rayra, geez, like two dozen more in 2006. And of course the Great Nazi Purge of 2007 to present: Fjordman, Ed, and a cast of hundreds. Of course that’s nowhere near comprehensive, just three big ones I remember.
I was banned for posting links and saying trial before hanging for a Serbian, and that fact checking used to be LGF’s stock-in-trade. Lots of people got it that way, maybe thousands, not part of a big purge.

There was also the bayou_king issue, at about the same time as the reaganite/AI flame war.
Quark2, Sara D, Reb Tex, me and a few others pretty much abandoned 1.0, and reaganite and ann started coming to visit. Reaganite got banned in absentia, having been gone from 1.0 for months.
Swampwoman, was the first I heard of that got banned for questioning Nancy’s actions. She posted at GCP the exchange that got her banned, and it was forceful, but not disrespectful. I think her “pointy-stick” broke the thin skin of Nancy, or exposed his vulnerability.
Swampie doesn’t post much anymore, but she does drop by and visit at nuke gingrich’s, and has her own blog.

It’s the sign a a complete paranoid control freak. How can anyone write an honest assessment of that blog when the archives are so full of holes? How can anyone believe anything the man has ever said? Without archival evidence to point too, he can claim anything he wants and there’s no way to prove whether he’s being truthful or not.
The archives of your blog are the evidence on how it has evolved over the years. For someone to make an honest and critical assessment about the blog, they would need all the archives in place, the good and the bad, for better or worse.
For someone who’s so adamant about evolution, he should know better then to destroy evidence about how the blog has evolved.

The thing about two a days was, they didn’t really bother me. In fact, I usually gained weight during that time.
After working all summer, much of it at my grandparents farm, only having to work out for a few hours a day, with a big break in between, was easy.

It seems at times that the discourse over at LGF is “moderation at all costs,” just so all of the “moderate” posters can label anyone with real conviction as being “unreasonable,” “hateful’” or “unhinged.”
I’m in full support of moderation when and where rational thinking has been abandoned, but there are so many examples in our country today of reasons to go ahead and demand action rather than discussion.
It seems over at LGF that moderation has become something of an end to itself, a trait shared ONLY with the most adamant of PC police.

The case of Charles Johnson’s descent into strange and erratic behavior keeps getting stranger.
I recently learned Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs has been attacking conservatives Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Bobby Jindal, and others. It’s been going on for awhile but somehow I missed it. The greatest appeal of LGF was the intelligent and entertaining posters who once frequented the blog. Most (if not all) of them have left or been banned recently, and it has become a boring echo chamber centered around Chuckie and his ego. The lemmings who remain there are sad, clueless people who need to get a life.
Charles Johnson is exhibiting behaviors associated with two specific personality disorders:
DSM-IV Cluster A (ODD and Eccentric) Paranoid Personality Disorder
DSM-IV Cluster B (Dramatic and Emotional) Narcissistic Personality Disorder
I think he literally has “gone nuts”. I bet a couple more pushes and he will snap. The response will pretty much be “lashing out” at EVERYONE.
Maybe we should start a “chip in” account for his straight jacket. They run around $300-$400.
I bet Johnson will find this disappointing: science isn’t strong enough to lure people into giving up their faith or belief in God.

It is by now fairly clear that the truth and Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs have little, if anything, to do with one another, but it did seem as if one further response was in order at this time.
Charles “Fake But Accurate” Johnson has been thoroughly discredited — he has posted fauxtography and claimed its fakery didn’t matter; charged that anti-Nazi books were Nazi books and that a documentary was actually a collection of Hitler Youth songs; and retailed outright lies. Yet now he has decided to try to stop the bleeding by declaring victory and going home. He is claiming (paste in the link to get around his block) that I am not going to speak at the Cologne conference because of this witless farrago. Actually, if I were in the habit of being led around by this self-important lying puffball, I would be busy denouncing every prominent conservative (he has so far denounced Beck, Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, Palin, Jindal, Fox News, and counting) and inveighing against the evils of creationism.
