WASHINGTON — We’re not finished yet. Even today, scientists say that human beings are continuing to evolve as our genes respond to rapid changes in the world around us.
In fact, the pressures of modern life may be speeding up the pace of human evolution, some anthropologists think.
Their view contradicts the widespread 20th-century assumption that modern medical practice, antibiotics, better diet and other advances would protect people from the perils and stresses that drive evolutionary change.
[..]It’s even conceivable, he said, that our genes eventually will change enough to create an entirely new human species, one no longer able to breed with our own species, Homo sapiens.
“Someday in the far distant future, enough genetic changes might have occurred so that future populations could not interbreed with the current one,” Sussman said in an e-mail message.
The still-controversial concept of “ongoing evolution” was much discussed last week at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Chicago.
It’s also the topic of a new book, “The 10,000 Year Explosion,” by anthropologists Henry Harpending and Gregory Cochran of the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
“For most of the last century, the received wisdom in the social sciences has been that human evolution stopped a long time ago,” Harpending said. “Clearly, received wisdom is wrong, and human evolution has continued.”
What I find most ironic is Intelligent Design must be accurate whereas evolution only has to be slightly plausible. These people are nuts. The claim is that Humans have been around for 200 thousand years, yet we are still the same species, but that will not be so in the far distant future.

Interesting that evolutionary change would be considered a “peril”, wouldn’t that be de-evolution, I thought that evolution causes better things not injury or risk.

#31. Just from reading both sides of this in this thread, it sounds like an honest difference of opinion between two sides, not as though there’s any lying or hypocrisy going on.
Moderating a board/blog can be difficult…
I do tend to favor banning trouble-makers after awhile.
I’m a moderator on another board, and I don’t want to be like Charles Johnson (ie, banning too quickly, and over trivial reasons), but on the other hand, I stopped going to another board where the moderators ‘bent over backwards’ to support free speech and to accomodate folks.
Result: trolls were permitted to post endlessly without consequence.
So there’s an art to moderating. You don’t want to be too lax or too strict. It’s not easy striking just the right balance.

I do think that modern pressures are increasing the occurrence of natural selection. Are we so surprised with the dietary changes we have experienced over the last 100 years that the rate of infertility is skyrocketing? But no matter how much our population selects for compatibility with high carbohydrate/high estrogenic environment, we will remain human, and not evolve into something else.

I can not remember where I read it, but regarding natural selection when “chance” is put into the equation natural selection doesn’t fair so well.
Natural selection or survival of the fittest to me seems to be kinda circular reasoning, those that survive are deemed the fittest. I could be wrong though and I have been told that by people who do not except evolution. But my reasoning cant seem to really grasp it not being circular reasoning.

I don’t see that God’s character necessarily has much to do with disproving creationism (or Intelligent Design) or proving Evolution.
Even if I were to grant the skeptic that God is a big mean cruel and heartless jerk, I could still posit that a big mean cruel and heartless jerk God was perfectly capable of creating humanity, the planet, the sun, and the animals, all in six days.
I don’t think it has to be argued that the God who created the cosmos has to be a nice, loving guy.
I don’t see how it follows that God (allegedly) being a jerk means He did not or could not create life and planet earth.

Well to me, natural selection means that the ones that are able to exist in an environment means they get to breed. Many of us cannot breed in the modern world. So natural selection would weed us out, except when we use our science to subvert that, eg: IVF. We know that males in the UK are exposed to much higher Estrogens than they were 50 years ago, and so the infertility rate is much higher. So the ones who can cope with the higher estrogens are able to breed and pass on their genes which can accomodate this change in the environment. That isn’t evolution however, as the guy who is still capable of breeding is still human, and so will his children.
