US Attacks Syria in Cross-Border Raid

Monday, October 27th, 2008

The US military is fed up with Syria’s open support of Iraqi jihadis, and today they sent helicopters into Syrian territory in a strike targeting a family that has been helping the jihadis get across the border: Syria: US choppers attack village near Iraq border.

DAMASCUS, Syria – U.S. military helicopters attacked territory inside Syria close to its border with Iraq Sunday, killing eight people in a strike the Syrian government condemned as “serious aggression.”

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the foreign fighter network that travels through Syria into Iraq in an area where the Americans have been unable to shut it down because it was out of the military’s reach.

“We are taking matters into our own hands,” the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

The attack came just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq said American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he called an “uncontrolled” gateway for fighters entering Iraq.

Rashid Khalidi Ranted About the ‘Zionist Lobby’ on Al Jazeera

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

In December 2003, Barack Obama’s friend Rashid Khalidi appeared on the Arabic version of Al Jazeera and let the mask drop completely, in a bigoted, antisemitic rant against the Washington Institute for Near East Policy: Dr. Rashid and Mr. Khalidi.

By God, I say that the participation of the sons or daughters of the Arabs in the plans and affairs of this institute is a huge error, this Israeli institute in Washington, an institute founded by AIPAC, the Zionist lobby, and that hosts tens of Israelis every year. The presence of an Arab or two each year can’t disguise the nature of this institute as the most important center of Zionist interests in Washington for at least a decade. I very much regret the participation of Arab officials and non-officials and academics in the activities of this institute, because in fact if you look at the output of this institute, it’s directed against the Palestinians, against the Arabs, and against the Muslims in general. Its products describe the Palestinians as terrorists, and in fact its basic function is to spread lies and falsehoods about the Arab world, of course under an academic, scholarly veneer. Basically, this is the most important Zionist propaganda tool in the United States.

Martin Kramer comments on the organization Khalidi attacked, which is directed by Dennis Ross—who is now Barack Obama’s Middle East advisor:

This is the intimidating language of Arab boycott, aimed against an institution with entirely American credentials. The Washington Institute is directed by Ambassador Dennis Ross, who was the chief Middle East peace negotiator in the presidential administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He has always been a model of balance (unlike Khalidi, whose forays into politics have always been to advise Yasir Arafat). The Washington Institute is run by Americans, and accepts funds only from American sources. (Contrast with the donors of Khalidi’s chair, whose precise identities Columbia still refuses to reveal.) …

I note that Khalidi has never made a comparable statement in English, probably for this reason: it would damage his reputation as a bridge-building moderate. To maintain that image, he’s even shared podiums with members of The Washington Institute. But Khalidi in Arabic, on Al-Jazeera, is someone else altogether. There he is the bridge-burner, the zealot who would warn other Arabs away from The Washington Institute because it is “Israeli,” and a “Zionist propaganda tool.” Behold, Arab-style McCarthyism.

Democrat Sex Scandals: Do They Really Exist?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Democratic Congressman Tim Mahoney is at the center of one of the most repulsive scandals in recent memory, but he continues to run for reelection and refuses to resign.

A document obtained by ABC News reveals new allegations of threatening behavior and sexual harassment toward a female staffer, that go far beyond Mahoney’s public confession, including claims that he urged one of his mistresses to serve as a “tease” for big donors.

The former Congressional staff member, Patricia Allen, was paid $121,000 by Mahoney after she was fired and threatened to sue.

The settlement was reached after Allen hired a lawyer who sent the Congressman a “demand” letter, listing specific examples of Mahoney’s alleged “gross misconduct” and “stalking” including:

“a) Calling Allen late in the evenings and demanding ”phone sex;“

b) Demanding that Allen answer his calls or face termination;

c) Demanding that Allen attend fundraisers and ”tease c-ck“ to bring in more donations from the male members of the public;

d) Demanding that Allen engage in sexual conduct with another woman for his enjoyment.”

Chuckie is at it again. The evil Creationists as he calls them are now infiltrating the Texas school system!

Texas Creationists Pushing Hard

Sci/Tech | Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 8:27:40 pm PST

An editorial in the Houston Chronicle blasts the Texas State Board of Education for their outrageous appointment of three creationists to a six-member panel that will decide Texas’ science curriculum standards—two of them shills for the infamous Discovery Institute: Board’s actions could put students at a disadvantage.

Texas has earned a reputation as an innovation powerhouse in fields ranging from agriculture and life sciences to high technology and space exploration.

But in a report issued this summer, a panel of Texas business, education and government leaders warned that without “critical changes” in state schools — especially in science-related instruction — the state will lose its global competitive edge.

It appears, however, that some members of the State Board of Education are working on a different agenda. Last week, they appointed three anti-evolution activists, including a leader of the “intelligent design” religious campaign, to a six-member panel that will review proposed new science curriculum standards.

The new standards will shape how science education is taught in Texas for the next decade, and it would be a terrible mistake to water down the teaching of evolution in any way.

Given the concerns about the state’s future work force, the appointments are a troubling signal. At a time when most educators are working to prepare students for 21st century jobs, the board members’ action threatens to confuse students, divide communities and tarnish Texas’ reputation as an international science and technology center.

Intelligent design advocates on the state board have been maneuvering for months to undermine the teaching of evolution in science classes. They say that students need to hear about the strengths and weaknesses of evolution, which of course is true. But then they argue that the universe is so complex that it required an intelligent designer and that should be taught in science classes as an alternative to evolution. This is a religious belief, not a scientific argument.

Those evil Creationists, we must silence them! Charles, just admit it, you hate Christians and God believing Jews. No one is allowed to disagree with your view. You are a Cult leader. Believers in ID are not that big of a threat. Worry about the Leftist-Islamic alliance.

Newsweek Reporter Fantasized About ‘Taking Out’ Rudy Giuliani

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

You’re not going to believe this one. Newsweek reporter Michael Hastings, while covering the presidential campaign, entertained fantasies about “taking out” Rudy Giuliani.

And now he’s talking openly about it, and about his underhanded dealings with the John McCain campaign, as he pretended to be friendly and sympathetic while looking for every negative angle possible.

He doesn’t even seem to be self-conscious about revealing what a dishonest, biased scumbag he is.

HACK: CONFESSIONS OF A PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN REPORTER.

The reality is: I quickly realized Rudy was a maniac. I had a recurring fantasy in which I took him out during a press conference (it was nonlethal, just something that put him out of commission for a year or so), saving America from the horror of a President Giuliani. If that sounds like I had some trouble being “objective,” I did. Objectivity is a fallacy. In campaign reporting more than any other kind of press coverage, reporters aren’t just covering a story, they’re a part of it—influencing outcomes, setting expectations, framing candidates—and despite what they tell themselves, it’s impossible to both be a part of the action and report on it objectively. In some cases, you genuinely like the candidate you’re covering and you root for him, because over the long haul you come to see him as a human being. For a long time, this was John McCain’s ace in the hole with the press, whom he referred to as “my base.” Reporters rode along with him, and he joked with them, and that went a long way toward shaping the tone of their coverage. (Last January a group of reporters asked McCain’s staff to make McCain campaign press T-shirts for them.) And because your success is linked to the candidate’s, you want to be with a winner, because that’s the story that makes the paper or the magazine or gets you on TV.

In my case, it was easy to despise Rudy. I’d spent two years covering the war in Iraq. I had a brother who was currently deployed there as an infantry platoon leader, and I had Iraqi friends who were now living as refugees. To listen to a man so casually invoke violence and warfare—a man who’d never set foot in Iraq or in any war zone—was troubling indeed. I wasn’t alone in the press corps. I don’t think I spoke to another journalist who ever said one good thing about the man. What did we say? We made fun of his divorces and his wives, that he’d married a second cousin, that he surrounded himself with corrupt cronies, that he had a piss-poor relationship with his children, etc. We talked about his megalomania and his cynical exploitation of September 11.

Still, I ate meals with staffers and campaign managers. I tried to say things that would make me appear sympathetic to Rudy while not technically lying. (“Wow, he sure seems popular.” “I was in New York on 9/11, and I have to be honest with you, I was glad Rudy was in charge.”) I tried to stay out of any discussion about issues and to just repeat the mantra to myself: I am here to observe and record, observe and record.

Obama Campaign Credit Card Fraud

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Credit card fraud is rampant in the Obama campaign, and it’s been verified.

In a nutshell: apparently, the Obama campaign disabled security checks that verify the name and address of a card-holder, when donating money. So it’s possible to donate money using a real card, but a fake name and address.

Quite a few people have reported that they’ve tested the system and confirmed that this is happening. I’m a little skeptical, because I’m not aware of any online payment gateways that would allow a web site to disable security checks for name and address, but I’m not certain that it isn’t possible. Any LGF readers with experience in online payment systems are invited to chime in.

UPDATE at 10/23/08 12:45:23 pm:

Ace has more: Obama Campaign Finance Fraud Gains Traction.

UPDATE at 10/23/08 12:46:01 pm:

And more at Powerline: Power Line – Who is John Galt?

UPDATE at 10/23/08 12:57:45 pm:

Several LGF readers have now confirmed that it is indeed possible to configure an online payment gateway to ignore names and addresses. Most businesses don’t do it, because they would forfeit the ability to dispute charge-backs — but that’s apparently not an issue to the Obama campaign.

Ayers Republished His Revolutionary Manifesto in 2006

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Yesterday we linked to Zombie’s new report on “Billy” Ayers’ and Bernardine Dohrn’s 1974 communist declaration of war against the United States.

Little did we realize that Ayers actually republished this book dedicated to Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin Sirhan Sirhan … in 2006: Sing a Battle Song: The Revolutionary Poetry, Statements, and Communiqus of the Weather Underground 1970 – 1974: Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers, Jeff Jones: Books.

Outraged by the Vietnam War and racism in America, a group of young American radicals announced their intention to “bring the war home.” The Weather Underground waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s, bombing the Capitol building, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison, and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history.

Sing a Battle Song brings together the three complete and unedited publications produced by the Weatherman during their most active period underground, 1970 to 1974: The Weather Eye: Communiques from the Weather Underground; Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism; and Sing a Battle Song: Poems by Women in the Weather Underground Organization

Sing a Battle Song is introduced and annotated by three of the Weather Underground’s original organizers-Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers, and Jeff Jones-all of whom are all still actively engaged in social justice movement work. Bernardine Dohrn, who during her years underground was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, today is a child advocate and professor of children’s law and international human rights. Bill Ayers, education professor and author of numerous books on democratic education is the author of a memoir, Fugitive Days. Jeff Jones, an environmentalist, fights global warming and other environmental threats that disproportionately harm the lives of the world’s poor.

Idealistic, inspired, pissed-off, and often way-over-the-top, the writings of the Weather Underground epitomizes the sexual, psychedelic, anti-war counterculture of the American 1960s and 1970s.

About the Author
Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, and Jeffrey Jones are former leaders of the Weather Underground. Dohrn teaches law and runs the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University
