Bawer: Who’s Sleeping More Deeply?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Bruce Bawer on the see-no-evil political correctness that prevents many Westerners from talking honestly about Islam: Who’s Sleeping More Deeply — Europe or America?

A big part of the reason for this dismaying American response to the cartoon affair is, of course, that Islamization hasn’t progressed as far in America as in Europe, and there’s consequently an incredible level of ignorance in America both about what’s really going on in Europe and about the very nature of Islam. In the current presidential campaign, only a small portion of the electorate seems to think that the war with jihadist Islam is a major issue. The one candidate who understood best what we’re up against, and who took it most seriously, Rudy Giuliani, was ridiculed across the political spectrum for being obsessed with 9/11 — as if the events of that day had been some kind of fluke or accident that has virtually no meaning for us today.

In depressing numbers, in short, Americans seem not to grasp the lessons of 9/11 — which should hardly be a surprise, considering how many journalists and politicians keep repeating that the terrorists are betraying a great and peaceful religion, that jihad means doing good works, and so on. A while back, in response to rumors that Barack Obama is a closet Muslim, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof argued that it would be a matter of utter indifference if the president of the United States were a Muslim. Of the hundreds of people who commented on this article on the Times website, the overwhelming majority applauded Kristof for his extraordinary courage in standing up to Islamophobia. Only a tiny handful of readers noted that there are, in fact, good reasons for free people to be concerned about the possibility of a U.S. president with a devout commitment to Islamic theology and law. The American media that do report honestly on the less attractive truths about Islam, moreover, tend to be media that people are encouraged to look down upon.

A Biden-Hillary Surprise?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Skeptical doesn’t even begin to describe my reaction to this rumor, but Andrew Malcolm seems to think we can’t dismiss it out of hand: After Sarah Palin VP debate, Joe Biden to step aside for Hillary Clinton?

The report does seem truly far-fetched — until you start recalling Biden’s series of campaign gaffes so far, including his effusive praise of McCain and taking a position contrary to Obama’s that matches the Republican’s on at least one issue.

And then there was that recent plaintive video (see video below) showing a shirt-sleeved Biden restlessly pacing the campaign stage. He was supposed to be talking about the Obama-Biden ticket and its platform. But instead Biden went on and on about what a close friend Hillary Clinton is and how well-qualified she is.

And, in fact, Biden suggested, she might have been a better vice presidential choice than he was, an unwelcome on-camera reminder of the gender imbalance on the Democratic ticket compared to the GOP’s.

Another possible reason for this candidate swap: What if in Thursday night’s VP debate in St. Louis, Biden, an expert debater, figuratively rolls up his sleeves, takes off the gloves and simply demolishes Palin rhetorically and policy-wise. Just destroys her.

Many if not most would find that bullying, an offense that could be rectified by Biden’s departure and Obama, the would-be chief executive, stepping in to decisively make things right by naming a woman in his place. And the once-popular Palin would have been neutralized.

In any other election cycle such a scenario would be truly beyond belief. Simply couldn’t happen.

Dukakis Complains

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

This election is bringing back bad memories for Michael Dukakis.

Former Gov. Michael Dukakis said Monday that John McCain’s presidential campaign is using the same race-based tactics that were used against him in his 1988 presidential run. …

Asked if he considered the ad to be in the same vein as the infamous ‘Willie Horton’ ad ad run by a third party group in support of George H.W. Bush in the 1988 presidential campaign, Dukakis told PolitickerMA.com: “Essentially, yes.”

Iowahawk: Council Demands Palin Ouster from Fallout Shelter

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Sometimes the hawk’s talons are sharp, like razors: Council Demands Palin Ouster from Fallout Shelter.

Newark, Blast Ring 4: Radioactive mutants from the National Jewish Democratic Council today tapped an angry Morse code press release message on the lid of the fallout shelter of another Jewish organization, demanding that it “immediately disinvite” controversial Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin from its fortified underground bunker.

“As an evangelical extremist Republican, Sarah Palin is no friend to surviving American Jews, or the former country of Israel,” said NJDC chairman Mark Stanley. “Allowing Palin into a Jewish refugee shelter creates not only a partisan circus, but a health hazard for fellow Jews who will be exposed to her dangerous Alaska redneck cooties.”

A spokes-tapper from the organization, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, defended the invitation of Palin to the join the group in the bunker, noting it had given similar invitations to several Democratic politicians after former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appeared at the United Nations last week strapped with a 50-megaton nuclear device. However, all of the Democratic invitees canceled under pressure from the NDJC.

“Just because Senators Clinton and Schumer were vaporized in the attack last week is no excuse for you to continue hosting Sarah Palin,” responded Stanley. “It is an affront to all Jews that you would actually share your freeze-dried kreplatch and tzimmes with this dangerous meshuggah shiksa.”

Palin’s Canceled Speech on Ahmadinejad

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Governor Sarah Palin was scheduled to speak today at a protest against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but was disinvited after political maneuvering by Hillary Clinton and the Obama campaign; the New York Sun has published the speech she would have given: Palin on Ahmadinejad: ‘He Must Be Stopped’.

Jawa Report: Orchestrated ‘Grassroots’ Smear Campaigns

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

In a monumental post, Rusty Shackleford traces one of the sources of the smears against Sarah Palin and finds some not-too-surprising connections: The Jawa Report: Hope, Change, & Lies: Orchestrated ‘Grassroots’ Smear Campaigns & the People that Run Them.

Our research suggests that a subdivision of one of the largest public relations firms in the world most likely started and promulgated rumors about Sarah Palin that were known to be false. These rumors were spread in a surreptitious manner to avoid exposure.

It is also likely that the PR firm was paid by outside sources to run the smear campaign. While not conclusive, evidence suggests a link to the Barack Obama campaign. Namely:

* Evidence suggests that a YouTube video with false claims about Palin was uploaded and promoted by members of a professional PR firm.

* The family that runs the PR firm has extensive ties to the Democratic Party, the netroots, and are staunch Obama supporters.

* Evidence suggests that the firm engaged in a concerted effort to distribute the video in such a way that it would appear to have gone viral on its own. Yet this effort took place on company time.

* Evidence suggests that these distribution efforts included actions by at least one employee of the firm who is unconnected with the family running the company.

* The voice-over artist used in this supposedly amateur video is a professional.

* This same voice-over artist has worked extensively with David Axelrod’s firm, which has a history of engaging in phony grassroots efforts, otherwise known as “astroturfing.”

* David Axelrod is Barack Obama’s chief media strategist.

* The same voice-over artist has worked directly for the Barack Obama campaign.
