Parsha Korach – Conspiracy Theory

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Today is Erev Shabbat once again and it is time for my weekly interpretation of our parsha. Last week, parsha Shelach, we saw the Jewish nation appearing to lose faith in Hashems promise. The slanderous report of the meraglim{spies} caused all the Israelites to weep inside.

Of course Hashem was very upset and he demonstrated this anger by promising that all the adults {over 20} would perish in the midbar{desert}. Moshe was very adept in his prayers and prevented the entire people from being instantly wiped out. This was the second time Moshe davened {prayed} for B’nai Yisroel’s wellbeing, the first being after the incident of the Chet HaEigel{sin of the golden calf} at Mount Sinai.

But even this was not enough for the Jewish people, the special nation which the Torah constantly portrays as an unfaithful wife, as another great leader of the people, a cousin of Moshe even, rose up to challenge Moshe and his stature in the Jewish nation.

The parsha begins:

1. Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi took [himself to one side] along with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben. 2. They confronted Moses together with two hundred and fifty men from the children of Israel, chieftains of the congregation, representatives of the assembly, men of repute. 3. They assembled against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “You take too much upon yourselves, for the entire congregation are all holy, and the Lord is in their midst. So why do raise yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”

Well, that pretty much lays it out on the table there. Korach was a grandson of Levi, the same tribe as Moshe, and he assembled several serial complainers against Moshe {Dathan and Abiram}, and various up-standing men of the entire congregation who numbered 250. This entire MOB came to Moshe and accused him of being so arrogant as to raise himself above the entire Jewish people. Their claim “You take too much upon yourselves, for the entire congregation are all holy, and the L-rd is in their midst. So why do you raise yourselves above the L-rds assembly?”. The basic premise is that every Jew is holy therefore why do they need to listen to Moshe? Isn’t this always the calling of anarchy and disarray? “We are all grownups here, who will tell me what to do?”.

Mel Brooks Inquisition Clip

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Just thinking about Jackie Mason and I remembered the fantastic scene in Mel Brooks movie “The History of the World – Part I”. Jackie plays a poor Jew who is being tortured by Torquamata {his balls were used to play ping-pong}.

Mel Brooks was very clever in his humor. I myself think this clip is hilarious because it portrays the Inquisitor as a fool. Also due to the fact that the presentation is in musical style it makes the subject matter light and humorous. Also the Jews are portrayed as strong in their religion and unwilling to convert to the false religion of the inquisitors.

You want funny? Heres funny!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Jackie Mason is pretty funny if you love shtick… This guy is purely shtick and you gotta love him, at least I do… It seems that Jackie has taken a vow, if the democrats win in November Jackie will remove all of his clothing. Save everyone the horrors and Jackie the embarrassment and vote Republican this November….

My First Draft for a McCain Speech

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

About six months ago I started to write a speech I thought would help McCain. It is not completed but I thought I would post it here:

Americas Opportunity

The world is a wonderful thing. It’s beauty and it’s vitality are awesome. Humanity flourishes and makes incredible progress. A human being should take a rest and contemplate the blessings which happen daily. Even in the darkness, the soul of man can conceive of hope. Each of us is a true individual, possessing a unique combination of skills and weaknesses. Our society is especially wonderful, our individuality an asset which we are proud of. Our individuality and innovativeness has fueled great inventions in the fields of medicine, mathematics, and electronics.

The light of our collective soul is burning brightly. We can shed light to the four corners of the world. Our abundance in skills and material can be the greatest thing if we use it for the good. While the truth flourishes in a world of bright light, the lack of truth grows in the peripheral darkness. Every mature human being knows that the lack of light, the darkness, is essential for us to appreciate the light.

The last century has been a difficult one for America. We had two world wars, depressions, financial scandals, wars which were fought and lost because of lack of resolve, recessions, sex scandals amongst some of the more memorable failings. But honestly we should wonder what living in America was like right after the civil war. It is hard to imagine the healing which had to take place to bring together the north and the south, to agree to stop killing each other and live together.

America is a land of hope and opportunity. The masses come to America because of the dream which all clear-headed people have, of being able to make a name for yourself, your family, and your generation. They are coming from all over Asia, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and India. They are coming from the Philippines and from Tibet. There are so many who come from the lands of Europe, including Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Hungary. They come here because life in America IS better than life in these other lands. We should not feel ashamed to say this. America is the best place to live in the world.

The people of America want a strong country, one which will not fail in protecting its citizens from attacks. We often learn early in life that those who are jealous of other peoples blessings will often lash out and try to destroy that which is good. This is one reason why a portion of the world is attacking us. The other part is an ideology which plays right into this kind of persons fears and desires. If America wants to stand tall against enemies which want to destroy it, it must be able to address both aspects.

First thing America needs is strong and regulated borders, both north and south. If an enemy can enter the country with impunity they can cause horrible damage to our infrastructure. If the country can ensure that immigration is legal and that undesirable {criminal, terrorist} individuals are not allowed in then we can move on to the next step.

Americans have such abundance. This incredible plentifulness should be used to help raise up our friends and neighbors. This country is one of the biggest donor nations in the world. Giving to the needy should be more of a priority. Individuals should take more responsibility by volunteering for community services. We can reach out a hand and get back a more compassionate world.

In order to combat radical religious ideology we must utilize a devastating weapon. The most lethal weapon to use against the darkness and evilness which radical religious ideology employ is the light of truth. The truth is used like a sword to remove the evil of the extremist. Our righteousness, combined with the light of truth, will be able to dislodge the misinformed ideologies. These religious dogmas of forced conversion, death of infidels, armed struggle, and suicide bombers must be extinguished with the bright light of truth.

Thats it for now…

John McCains position in the WOT

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I am a supporter of Republican candidate John McCain. This will be the first Republican I have voted for in almost 16 years {see about muman613 for more information}. There are several reasons I will vote for McCain. Even though some of my more ‘quote-unquote’ conservative friends didn’t support him early in the primaries, I had a feeling that John would be the man who could win the presidency against either of the democrats.

John McCain Logo

The primary reason I think McCain is best suited for the position of Commander In Chief of the USA is because of his position and his strength in the ongoing war on terrorists. I cannot quote the exact poll numbers, but if my memory serves me correctly, it is John McCains strength on this issue which keeps him competitive against Obama. According to the latest USA Today-Gallup Poll, McCain leads Obama 52 vs 33 in the topic of War on Terror. {See Manila Standard Today for more information}

McCain must keep up the strength and also work more on educating people why his oil plan is superior to the democrat plan. Even though for a while I understood the need to preserve the environment {i.e. I was against drilling off the California coast}, I believe that we can drill more efficiently today and be more environmentally sensitive. I am still worried about building new Nuclear facilities in California due to the inherent problem posed by the seismic and tectonic activity {earthquake faults}.

According to McCains web site @ http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/054184f4-6b51-40dd-8964-54fcf66a1e68.htm it is written:

Fighting Against Violent Islamic Extremists and Terrorist Tactics

The attacks on September 11th represented more than a failure of intelligence. The tragedy highlighted a failure of national policy to respond to the development of a global terror network hostile to the American people and our values. The 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1998 attacks on the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the 2000 bombing of the USS COLE indicated a growing global terrorist threat before the attacks on New York and Washington. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden’s declaration of war against the United States hit home with unmistakable clarity.

America faces a dedicated, focused, and intelligent foe in the war on terrorism. This enemy will probe to find America’s weaknesses and strike against them. The United States cannot afford to be complacent about the threat, naive about terrorist intentions, unrealistic about their capabilities, or ignorant to our national vulnerabilities.

In the aftermath of 9/11 John McCain fought for the creation of an independent 9/11 Commission to identify how to best address the terrorist threat and decrease our domestic vulnerability. He fought for the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security and the creation of the U.S. Northern Command with the specific responsibility of protecting the U.S. homeland.

As President, John McCain will ensure that America has the quality intelligence necessary to uncover plots before they take root, the resources to protect critical infrastructure and our borders against attack, and the capability to respond and recover from a terrorist incident swiftly.

He will ensure that the war against terrorists is fought intelligently, with patience and resolve, using all instruments of national power. Moreover, he will lead this fight with the understanding that to impinge on the rights of our own citizens or restrict the freedoms for which our nation stands would be to give terrorists the victory they seek.

John McCain believes that just as America must be prepared to meet and prevail against any adversary on the field of battle, we must engage and prevail against them on the battleground of ideas. In so doing, we can and must deprive terrorists of the converts they seek and counter their teaching of the doctrine of hatred and despair.

As President, John McCain will take it as his most sacred responsibility to keep America free, safe, and strong – an abiding beacon of freedom and hope to the world.

It is through the following steps Mr McCain will accomplish the goal of protecting America:

  1. Effective Missile Defense
  2. INCREASING the size of the American Military
  3. Modernizing the Armed Services
  4. Smarter Defense Spending
  5. Taking Care of Military Personnel and their families
  6. Honoring the commitment to Veterans and Retirees

It sure is an interesting election year this year. Ive never seen anything like this…

Judaisms View on Treatment of Animals

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I have been thinking about Judaisms view on the treatment of animals. For over 20 years I have been taking care of up to 6 cats. Currently there are only 3 cats who live inside and the oldest is 12 years old.

Judaism holds the principle of preventing tza’ar ba’alei chayim, or the suffering of living creatures. It is also important to remember that the way a man relates to the animals around him reflects on the way he relates to fellow humans.

It is very interesting that even animals must be given Shabbos rest. According to Exodus 20:10 we must allow our animals to rest on the Sabbath. Torah has many mitzvahs regarding how a person treats his domestic animals, for instance the prohibition of muzzling the ox while it works in the field.

There are also the mitzvahs regarding unloading the burden of an animal, even if we don’t like its owner {Exodus 23:5 & Deut 22:4}. And everyone knows that one must send away a mother bird if we are going to take its eggs. This mitzvah has the same reward as honoring your mother and father.

Talmud and Feeding Animals

The Talmud says that before people eat a meal, they have to feed the animals in their care. (Gitten 64) The Talmud also says that before people decide to take a work or companion animal into their home, they must first make sure they can feed the animal properly.

We are permitted to violate Shabbat to a limited extent to rescue an animal in pain or at risk of death. For example, we can move them if they are in pain, move objects that we would not otherwise be permitted to touch to relieve their pain, we may give them medicine, and we may ask non-Jews to do things that would violate Shabbat to help a suffering animal.

The following links contain more information about Judaism and treating animals.

Israel – Hamas Ceasefire Already Violated by Phalistinians

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I am not a betting man and yet when I heard that Israel was even contemplating a ceasefire with her nemesis Hamas, I was inclined to wager on how quickly the Phalistinians would violate it.

Well, it lasted almost seven days. Hamas was just waiting for the right time to resume launching their Kassams and mortars into Sderot.

The article can be read at Israel National News @ http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/126616 .

I am old enough to remember many broken ceasefires and promises by the Phalistinians. Is there any sanity in trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results? As Likud MK Yisrael Katz said,

“The agreement was over even before it started. The government, which has both abandoned Gilad Shalit and also not achieved a calm, must respond with unusual gravity, or else the lives of the residents of the south will be totally wanton.”

Let us hope that our brave men and women in the IDF have Hashems ratzon and deliver a message to the rogue element in Gaza. How can any nation exist while missiles are raining daily on residential citys. I pray that Israel gets the chutzpah to stand up for what is right.

PS: Spelling of Phalistinian is on purpose.

Overwhelming Majority of Americans believe!

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

According to a new poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public life a majority of Americans believe in G-d.

By many measures, Americans are strongly religious: 92 percent believe in G-d, 74 percent believe in life after death and 63 percent say their respective scriptures are the word of G-d.

There are some troubling findings but in general this is very good news.

The Song At the Sea

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

I was just thinking about this awesome song the Children of Israel sang at the shore of the Sea of Reeds. This song is part of our Shabbat morning davening.

1. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the
LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for He hath
triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath He thrown into
the sea.

2. The LORD is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation:
He is my God, and I will prepare Him an habitation; my father’s
God, and I will exalt Him.

3. The LORD is a Man of War: the LORD is His Name.

4. Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath He cast into the sea: his
chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea.

5. The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

6. Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right
hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

7. And in the greatness of Thine excellency Thou hast overthrown them
that rose up against Thee: Thou sentest forth Thy wrath, which
consumed them as stubble.

8. And with the blast of Thy nostrils the waters were gathered
together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were
congealed in the heart of the sea.

9. The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the
spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword,
my hand shall destroy them.

10. Thou didst blow with Thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as
lead in the mighty waters.

11. Who is like unto Thee, O LORD, among the heavenly powers? Who is like Thee,
glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

12. Thou stretchedst out Thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

13. Thou in Thy Mercy hast led forth the people which Thou hast
redeemed: Thou hast guided them in Thy Strength unto Thy Holy
Habitation.

14. The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on
the inhabitants of Palestina.

15. Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab,
trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan
shall melt away.

16. Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm
they shall be as still as a stone; till Thy people pass over, O
LORD, till the people pass over, which Thou hast purchased.

17. Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine
inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee
to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have
established.

18. The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

19. For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his
horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of
the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in
the midst of the sea.

20. And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in
her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and
with dances.

21. And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for He hath
triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath He thrown into
the sea.
